Tenerife chooses a new Carnaval Queen

Today, as far as the international spectating public is concerned, sees the start of the main events of Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s annual Carnaval, with the Gala for the Election of the Carnaval Queen. This year, 17 candidates compete for the title and the honour of leading the Carnaval parades: Friday night’s opening parade and next Tuesday’s Main Parade.

As ever, the gala is to be televised by Televisión Canaria, starting at 21:15 hrs.

Those not on the island should be able to watch it live on the internet here.

This year also, TVC have created a YouTube channel for their Carnaval coverage, where you’re sure to be able to view highlights of all of the events.

Ministry of Sound at Tenerife Carnaval

The Plaza de Europa in Santa Cruz during this carnaval will be the venue for the Club Nocturno Vértigo, which hardly requires translation, on 4,5,6,7,8,9,11 and 12 March.

Among participants are a host of international DJs including Ministry of Sound. Their slot is slated for 23:00 on Saturday, March 5th. It’s the first time that the British brand has participated in a Carnaval.

No Sex Please …

With carnaval comes the inevitable alcohol and letting go of inhibitions, but while in Gran Canaria, 60,000 condoms are being distributed free, in Tenerife the message seems to be against carnaval sex altogether. With a 0 drugs policy too, as Jack Montgomery says, “I guess that only leaves Rock ‘n’ Roll to enjoy then.” Well, salsa and dance music anyway.
