Frigate is such a big noise, but only just!

THE magnificent frigate nestling in the San Miguel Marina really is a sight to behold. And we were led to expect an explosive few minutes on Saturday as the crew on the Russian-built ship Standard – a replica of the one the Tsar, Peter the Great, had built in 1703 – rewound time to the 18th Century. In those far-off days, in the absence of timekeepers such as clocks or watches, The Noon Day Gun, as it was known, was originally fired to allow ships to check the accuracy of their marine chronometers – an instrument necessary for the accurate calculation of longitude.
