Canaries Day rioting over oil-drilling pact

CANARY Island officials have demanded an explanation from the Spanish Government about last week's rioting during the Día de Canarias celebrations at the Guimerá Theatre in Santa Cruz.

The Canarian Government complained of what it called "inadequate deployment" of police to deal with the angry crowd.

They were protesting against oil exploration off Canary Island waters, which has been backed by the central government, despite a huge protest from the Canary Islands Government. Protesters stormed the stage, cutting proceedings short to the point that the traditional Canary Hymn was not performed.
