Chilly December

THE month of December was the coldest in the Canary Islands since 2008 and the second coolest this Millennium.

The average temperature in the archipelago was 15.5 degrees Celsius or 61 degrees Fahrenheit.  This is around 2C below the average temperature as recorded by the Advancement Climatology of the State Agency Meteorology (Aemet) .

This is unusual because there have been a high number of calima days. The unseasonal weather event has helped push the average temperature up, and it’s understood the figure would have been as much as 5C cooler but for the strange weather just before Christmas.
