Something for the weekend: El Camino del Hermano Pedro

This weekend, on Saturday, 18th April 2015, is the annual Camino del Hermano Pedro - a pilgrimage route originally taken by goatherd Hermano Pedro (Brother Peter), Tenerife's first saint.

According to the town hall of Granadilla de Abona, this year more than a thousand people have signed up to take part in the 19km hike, a figure that's expected to exceed those recorded in previous years.

For about five hours, walkers can enjoy natural and cultural elements, lots of terraces and orchards and a unique flora; scrub, pine, and fauna of great interest can be seen along the entire route .

Inscription closed on April 10th, so this is definitely one to put in your diary for next year.

Unlike so many journalists writing about the resorts, Pamela has not only actually been to Tenerife, she lived on the island for 16 years, for the majority of that time in a rural valley immersed in the local culture in a way that few outsiders have been privileged to do and gaining a wealth of knowledge about the island, its people, their customs, fiestas and celebrations that she is now able to share via this site. Fluent in Spanish, she also translated and reported for the various English-language newspapers.
