Día de Canarias - Canary Islands Day

Parlamento 05

This Saturday, 30th May 2015, the islands celebrate Día de Canarias (Canaries Day), an annual event that commemorates the anniversary of first session of the Canarian Parliament, which took place on this date in 1983. The day is a great opportunity to experience the islands' traditions. There will be all sorts of events taking place all over the islands, but to cherry-pick just a few examples:

In the Plaza del Llano in Alcalá, there will be a traditional festival with music, dancing and lots of colourful typical costumes to be seen. From 10am until 6pm, there'll be a crafts fair in the plaza with 24 stalls offering gastronomy and traditions of the area, among them pastry, bakery, liquor, soap, cheese, raffia, straw, toys, dolls (rag dolls), honey, etc.

Then move up to the Plaza Pública in Santiago del Teide, where there's another crafts fair taking place from 10am to 8pm and various performances taking place from 4.30 pm.

Over in the north, in Los Realejos, they're celebrating Canaries Day with a livestock fair including ox driving. Throughout the morning there will be exhibitions of cattle and goats, with a demonstration of milking, dog shows, pigeon exhibition with release of doves and an exhibition of canaries (birds).
