Something for the weekend: Day of Traditons in El Palmar

Perhaps because I lived in the beautiful El Palmar valley for almost a decade and within walking distance of the Finca Los Pedregales where this takes place, but the Día de las Tradiciones (Day of Traditions) in El Palmar has to be one of my favourite traditional Tenerife events, which this year is taking place this weekend, on Sunday, 27th September, coinciding with the celebrations for the Día Mundial del Turismo (World Tourism Day).

La Trilla, the threshing of the wheat using traditional methods involving horses, oxen and LOTS of audience participation from adults and children alike is just a part of the festivities where the rural work gets done and everyone is rewarded with a party at the end of it - the way agriculture used to be done. There are also farm implements on display, demonstrations of other rural activities, such as making charcoal and often pony rides.

The day's activities start at around 10:30 and carry on into the afternoon with a free lunch for all and the chance to try local products and dancing to a local band in the open air next to the Farmers' Market building.
