Something for the weekend: Fiestas de San Antonio Abad in Buenavista del Norte and La Florida, Orotava

This final weekend of of the month, on Sunday, January 31st, sees the celebration of the Fiestas de San Antonio Abad in Buenavista del Norte with it's traditional Feria de Ganado (Livestock Fair) and Romería.

The Livestock Fair takes place from 11 am at the Urbanización Las Marinas in the Triana district of the town, whilst at the same time, mass is said in honour of the saint at the church of Ntra. Sra. de Los Remedios, after which the icon is taken in procession to the livestock enclosure, where the animals will be blessed at 1 pm.

At 2 pm the Romería of San Antonio Abad leaves from Triana and processes, through the streets of the town to reach the Plaza de Los Remedios where the awards ceremony will take place.  Events of the day are rounded off with dancing to the music of the Malibu Band Orchestra.

Meanwhile, in the district of La Florida in La Orotava, as the culmination of their 10 day long program of fiestas for San Antonio Abad y la Virgen de La Esperanza 2016, there the 35th Romería of San Antonio Abad and the Virgen de La Esperanza also begins at 2 pm, with the participation of street musicians, carts, wagons, etc.

Unlike so many journalists writing about the resorts, Pamela has not only actually been to Tenerife, she lived on the island for 16 years, for the majority of that time in a rural valley immersed in the local culture in a way that few outsiders have been privileged to do and gaining a wealth of knowledge about the island, its people, their customs, fiestas and celebrations that she is now able to share via this site.
