Carnival Main Parade in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Tuesday, February 9th

On Martes de Carnaval (Carnival Tuesday/Mardi Gras/Fat Tuesday), which you'll probably know better as Shrove Tuesday - which this year falls on Tuesday, February 9th - carnival's main parade, known as the Coso Apoteosis takes place along the Avenidas de Francisco La Roche and Marítima on the seafront in Santa Cruz. The parade starts at around 4 pm and rolls on into dancing to the biggest orchestras in the Plaza de la Candelaria from 8 pm, undoubtedly with some fireworks thrown in there somewhere for good measure.

Last year 7,500 seats were provided along the length of the route, available for those who wish to use them, at a nominal charge of €2.50 each. (Well, if you're early enough, as the carnival parade draws tens of thousands of spectators.) There is also an area provided for those with reduced mobility located at the Alameda del Duque de Santa Elena, by the Plaza de España. No doubt there will be similar arrangements in place this year.

To get you in the mood, here are 3.5 hours from last year's parade: Coso Apoteosis Carnaval S/C Tenerife 2015

Unlike so many journalists writing about the resorts, Pamela has not only actually been to Tenerife, she lived on the island for 16 years, for the majority of that time in a rural valley immersed in the local culture in a way that few outsiders have been privileged to do and gaining a wealth of knowledge about the island, its people, their customs, fiestas and celebrations that she is now able to share via this site. Fluent in Spanish, she also translated and reported for the various English-language newspapers.
