Tenerife’s Easter Programmes 2016

Representación de la Pasión de Jesucristo de Adeje

Passion of Christ in Adeje

One of the biggest events of Easter each year in Tenerife is the Representación de la Pasión de Jesucristo de Adeje (Adeje’s Passion Play), which takes place on Good Friday, 25th March 2016. The performance will be staged as usual along the town’s Calle Grande – the road going up from the post office to the Town Hall. The performance, recreating the last days and death of Jesus of Nazareth, will begin at 12 noon and last for two hours, culminating in the crucifixion in the Plaza de España at the top of Calle Grande between the Town Hall and the church. The event will be broadcast live on Televisión Canaria.

Adeje is not the only place in Tenerife where the Vía Crucis is reenacted, however. It may well be on a smaller scale (and that could be an advantage), but there is also the XIII Vía Crucis “Pasión y Muerte de Jesús” taking place in the north of Tenerife, in San Juan de la Rambla. This also starts at mid-day.

Holy Week in La Laguna

If you wish to see the processions involving the brotherhoods in Klu Klux Klan-like garb, then head to La Laguna. See: Programa de Semana Santa de La Laguna 2016.

Pascua Florida in Guía de Isora

Arelatively recent Easter tradition is the Pascua Florida (Floral Easter) in Guía de Isora, now in it's eighth year, which features some quite fantastic and avant-garde floral art, until March 26th. VIII Pascua Florida y Semana Santa 2016 de Guía de Isora

El Médano Feria del Saldo

Also this week is the tenth Feria del Saldo (Bargain Fair) being held in El Médano’s main square today and tomorrow, 24th and 25th March. The annual market is an opportunity for the 30 or so local businesses who will have stalls to offer all the stock they wish to liquidate, or ends of lines, at bargain basement prices.

Unlike so many journalists writing about the resorts, Pamela has not only actually been to Tenerife, she lived on the island for 16 years, for the majority of that time in a rural valley immersed in the local culture in a way that few outsiders have been privileged to do and gaining a wealth of knowledge about the island, its people, their customs, fiestas and celebrations that she is now able to share via this site. Fluent in Spanish, she also translated and reported for the various English-language newspapers.
