Carnival Opening Parade in Santa Cruz

The first of the parades as carnival takes to the streets is the Cabalgata Anunciadora (Opening Parade), which this year takes place on Friday 1 March 2019 from 8pm.

The parade is headed by murga group Afilarmónica Ni Fú Ni Fá, followed by the Carnival Queen. Also participating will be the Junior and Senior Carnaval Queens along with their Maids of Honour, the children's and adult murga groups, the comparsas, musical and choreographic groups, in addition to the hundreds of people in costumes and the decorated floats and cars who wish to join the first carnival parade in the street this year.

The parade leaves from the Plaza de la República Dominicana, then the route goes along the Avenida de la Asunción, Ramón y Cajal, Galcerán, Plaza de Weyler, Méndez Núñez, El Pilar, Villalba Hervás and La Marina, to end up in the Avenida Francisco La Roche.

There is usually an area provided by the fiesta organisers for people with reduced mobility at the junction of Méndez Núñez and Robayna streets.

Meanwhile, over in the Avenida de Bélgica the contest for the best Carrozas y Coches
Engalanados of Carnival 2019 will be taking place. The rules of this appear to be that vehicles under 10 meters in length are counted as a coche engalonado (decorated car) and those over 10 meters, a carroza (float). In reality, all manner of old bangers, lorries, trucks, buses, etc., are transformed into some clever (and sometimes absurd) and unrecognisable forms. These vehicles also draw up the rear of the parades.

Avenida Francisco La Roche
The 5th Carnival Reggae Festival (23:30 - 05:00 h)

Many Santa Cruz carnival events are televised via RTVE or RTVC, locally, nationally and internationally or recordings may be found on the CarnavalTVC Youtube channel.

All events are liable to change beyond our control.
