Santa Cruz Auctions Carnival Kiosk Pitches

One of the biggest food stalls at carnival in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

As it does every year, this week, the town hall in Santa Cruz de Tenerife has auctioned off the pitches in the streets and squares of the city for the numerous carnival stalls and kiosks and the total collected amounted to €175,553, a considerale increase on the €121.453 collected last year. The number of pitches remained the same, 85, for activities in the food sector; mostly cafeterias, drinks and fast food. The most expensive kiosk was awarded for €33,411 and corresponds to the one located in the Plaza de La Candelaria.

One new introduction in the rules for this year's carnival, in a nod towards sustainability, is that kiosks will have the obligation to sell - at the symbolic price of €1 - reusable cups, which will also have a specific design provided by the carnival organisers.

Street food at carnival is definitely part of the tradition that really shouldn't be missed at least once, but the more prominent and expensive the pitch, the more eye-watering the price of the food and drink. Also, prices are not always clearly displayed, so always ask and never be afraid to say 'thanks, but no thanks' and walk on if you think it's exhorbitant.
