The Changing Face of the Three Kings

Attending to one of the camels at the Three Kings in Garachico

The format of the Three Kings celebrations and parades has been changing in recent years. When we went regularly to see them in Garachico, the Three Kings arrived riding their camels and at the end of the night, they would call the names of countless children who would then go up and receive their gifts from the Three Kings, publicly.

In Buenavista del Norte a few years ago, the use of animals was discontinued to prevent their exploitation, as was the distribution of gifts publicly, so that "all the children of the municipality can attend and participate in the event on equal terms, without giving rise to possible discrimination". Maintaining the distribution of gifts purchased by families during the Los Reyes parade was an obvious discrimination for less fortunate families.

This year, the Three Kings Cavalcade on January 5, 2020 through the streets of the city of La Laguna, will, once again, have the traditional presence of camels (the inference is that they have been absent in some previous years) although they will not carry Their Majesties and will take a shorter route. For their 'elf and safety, "the camels are never going to be loaded with people, they are only going to parade and only for part of the route". It has been decided that Their Majesties will move into new floats with thrones.

All events are liable to change beyond our control.
