The Election of the Carnival Queen and Big Week of Carnival in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Carnival Queen at the Gala for her Election in 2019

The eagerly-awaited climax of all of the contests in the run up to carnival in Santa Cruz de Tenerife takes place tonight, Wednesday, 19 February 2020, with the Gala de la Reina (Gala Election of the Carnival Queen). This year 16 candidates will compete for the coveted title. Show starts at 9:30 pm and, if you're not going in person, you should be able to stream the TV coverage live via the the CarnavalTVC Youtube channel.

Presenting the gala, directed by designers Marco&María, will be Pedro Rodríguez, of Radio Club Tenerife Cadena SER and Alexis Hernández, of Canarias Radio La Autonómica, with collaboration from singer, Soraya Arnelas. Organisers say they wanted to give all the prominence to the candidates, but that the gala will also be a party for the Carnival groups. The final touch will be a performance by, Mexican singer, Paulina Rubio.

Big Week of Carnival in Santa Cruz de Tenerife: Opening Parade, Rhythm and Harmony Comparsas, Daytime Carnival, Carnival Monday, Main Parade

After the Festival of Zarzuela on Thursday, 20 February, the big week of carnival in Santa Cruz de Tenerife - with the longest weekend of partying in its history - kicks off with the Cabalgata Anunciadora - Carnival Opening Parade on Friday, 21 February. The parade starts at around 8 pm and makes its way through the city, eventually to the streets around the Plaza de España. The Carrozas y Coches Engalanados (decorated floats and cars) will gather around the Plaza de la República Dominicana before joining the parade.

On Saturday, 22 February, starting at 9 pm, is the Ritmo y Armonía (Rhythm and Harmony) contest of the Comparsa Groups. This spectacular event also includes the Carnival Queen and her court and takes place along the Avenida Francisco la Roche, although this year, will take place in the opposite direction, starting from the Cabildo and travelling north. The first 500 meters, which makes sense as this will be in front of the paid seats, will allow space for the performance of their routines for the contest element, while further up, they will just parade. The other reason for the change is to have the Palacio Insular, the Plaza de España and the city skyline as a more attractive backdrop duing the television boradcasts of the event. This direction only applies to this one evening.

Daytime Carnival Sunday 3 March 2019

This brings us to the first of the two CARNAVAL DE DÍA (Daytime Carnival) events, on Sunday 23 February, that make the carnival more accessible to the whole family.

Carnival Monday, 24 February 2020, will be public holiday in the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. It's quiet in the daytime, carnival wise, but the Monday night is one of the biggest and longest party nights of the carnival. Meanwhile, on the neighbouring island of La Palma on Carnival Monday, the biggest event of carnival in Santa Cruz de La Palma, Los Indianos, fills the streets of the town with kilos and kilos of talcum powder.

And on Shrove Tuesday / Carnival Tuesday, 25 February 2020, the event that this has all been building up to, the Coso Apoteosis (Carnival's Main Parade) takes place from around 4 pm in the afternoon, along the Avenida Francisco la Roche.
