Carnivals of the World: Venice Carnival

Carnival Participants in Venice

If there's one thing I'm learning whilst researching this series on Carnivals of the World - the theme chosen for Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival in 2021 it's that every carnival location claims that its carnival is the biggest, or the oldest.  [I'd reserve best for Santa Cruz de Tenerife, but it's clear that I'm biased.] Nice thought it was the original, with records dating back to 1294, well, Venice Carnival claims its origins back to the year 1162. Beat that!

What I don't think can be argued is that Venice tops for elegance.

Sadly, Venice Carnival in 2020 had to be cut short due to the developing coronavirus situation, but here is a video of the lavish Venice Carnival 2020 Grand Opening.

2020 🎭 VENICE VENEZIA Carnival

There will be no Carnival in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 2021, although the City Council is working with the Carnival groups in the design of some activities that can maintain the spirit of the festivities during the weeks in which it should have been celebrated
