Puerto de la Cruz is missing out on the Embarcación de la Virgen del Carmen

Embarcación de la Virgen in days gone by. ElPuertoProject Some Rights Reserved

It would be very difficult to hold the Embarcación de la Virgen del Carmen in Puerto de la Cruz and maintain social distance when this attracts tens of thousands and is possibly the town's biggest event of the year. Normally held on the Tuesday before 16 July, it would, in better circumstances, therefore, have been taking place today, Tuesday 14 July.

But this year, there are very different Grandes Fiestas that are actually not so big and grand: the only events listed for today (download program PDF - in Spanish, but LOTS of pretty pictures) being the celebrations of the Eucharist, although the one at 7pm is going to be transmitted direct via Facebook, as are popular items looking back on the fiestas.

The mayor has added that "we hoped to announce the celebration in 2021 of the centenary of the first Embarcación de la Virgen del Carmen and perhaps fate will put us back in the position that the last procession was that of her 99th birthday."
