Santa Cruz will record the Gesta of July 25 and broadcast it on social networks

Gesta del 25 de julio

This year marks the 223rd anniversary of the defeat of Admiral Nelson at the hands of General Gutiérrez. The recreation of the Gesta of July 25 has become one of the main attractions of Santa Cruz during the month of July and that each year attracts thousands of people to enjoy the representation by the Historical-Cultural Association of 25 of July 1797. This year, the Covid-19 pandemic and all the security measures that come with it, prevents the re-enactment of the battles in the streets, but one battle will take place and a video, about ten minutes long, of this piece of the history of Santa Cruz will be recorded in the days before July 25, to be shown through social networks on the 25th July itself.

Castillo Negro (Castle of St John the Baptist or Black Castle)

The filming will take place in the surroundings of the Castillo Negro (Castle of St John the Baptist or Black Castle) and the intention is to recreate the battle between the English and Spanish troops. As specified by the Association, the reenactors will be the only persons who will have access, respecting social distance and, if this is not possible, with masks.

To ensure that there will be no public gatherings, they will not say what day it is going to be recorded, the accesses will be fenced off and there will be auxiliary personnel to prevent unauthorised access. It is a way of not losing the tradition of celebrating the Gesta in the hope that next year we can return to the tradition as we know it.

TRIBUTE TO THE FALLEN AT THE ALMEYDA MUSEUM ON JULY 25

On 25 July also, the Almeyda museum (Canary Islands Museum of Military History) will host a tribute to the fallen. A wreath will be placed on the monument that stands in the museum, the flag will be lowered, and then the anthems of England and France will be played. The event will be terminated with a gun salute.
