The First Daytime Carnival in Santa Cruz

At the first Daytime Carnival in 2020

In better times, today Sunday, 14 February, would have been the first of the Carnaval de Día (Daytime Carnival) events taking place in Santa Cruz. The introduction of this event some years ago [2008], was in my opinion, genius. During the day there is a much wider range of entertainment for an even more diverse range of of ages in attendance from the smallest kids in strollers to old folk - people who may not be happy going out in these crowds at night or it's way past their bedtime.

For me the best activities during Daytime Carnival are watching people in costume walk past or wandering around all the different areas of carnival, seeing people's costumes, which, during the day means whole families, including the dog. It is customary for families, groups of friends, work colleagues, etc., to dress alike and this can have hilarious results. Some are professional, some are home made: all are amazingly creative and a joy to see.

This year, of course, because of the COVID pandemic, carnival will not be taking place and instead, virtual carnival events will take place between 17 February and 7 March
