Candelaria, again without August festivities

Peregrinación a Candelaria (Pilgrimage to Candelaria)

Mayor of Candelaria, Mari Brito, has confirmed that, for the second consecutive year in her municipality, there will be no August festivities in honor of the Patron Saint of the Canary Islands. “There will be no pilgrimage nor celebrations in the street, since the Council is not going to encourage the mass gathering of people. We will try to make the festival reach [people] through audiovisual media, as we did in 2020,” she explained.

The main objective is to avoid risk that may promote the advance of contagion.

“We have already discussed this with the Dominican community and they share our concern about the evolution of the pandemic. Now, we do not have the same tools to control the spread of the virus, therefore, the basilica will be closed on the night of August 14 and the events will be broadcast on television. They are going to be filmed without an audience so that people can live their faith from their homes in safety," she stressed.

The mayor hopes to once again have the understanding and responsibility of the citizens. “We will fight coronavirus with the mechanisms we have. In addition, there is enough time during the year for those who wish to be able to walk to Candelaria”, she concluded.

Candelaria, se queda un año más sin fiestas de agosto: no habrá peregrinación ni celebraciones en la calle

The Cabildo too recommends not making a pilgrimage to Candelaria

Minister of the Natural Environment and Security, Isabel García, recalled that "due to prevention measures to face the health crisis, the traditional trails of the summit will be closed to walkers from 6:00 p.m. on August 13 to 6:00 a.m. on August 16." The Highways Area will not close the TF28, as has been done in other years due to the presence of walkers, since the Candelaria Council itself has advised against a pilgrimage. It should also be noted that the Candelaria basilica will remain closed on the night of August 14.

“The celebrations in Candelaria this year will not take place, it is very important to avoid concentrations of people, so we recommend extreme care and common sense and therefore, from the Cabildo Security Area we urge the population not to carry out the traditional pilgrimage”, indicated the Minister of Security, Isabel García.

However, from the Cabildo it is recommended to follow the celebrations through the media that will broadcast the festive events. Televisión Canaria will broadcast the Proclamation on August 13 at 10 p.m. by Pepe Dámaso; a documentary "The skin of faith" about the Guanche Ceremony on August 14 at 9.30 p.m., and the offering to the Patroness of the Canary Islands on August 15 at 10:00 p.m., all of them recorded in advance.
