Not many years ago, the presentation of the candidates for the three categories of carnival queen (junior, adult and senior) in Santa Cruz de Tenerife was a simple event without much ceremony and wasn't open to the public, but gradually it became a televised gala event that heralded the beginning of the festivities, before the start of the contests. Most recently, this opening ceremony had taken place in the Plaza Alisios, next to the Auditorio de Tenerife Adán Martín. The inauguration for Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival 2022 should have been taking place today, Friday 28 January, but as we now know, the intention is to move this year's carnival to June, because of the current level of COVID infections.
