Three Kings to make annual Royal Progress

Three Kings in the Heliodoro Rodríguez López football stadium in a previous year

The Three Kings will arrive at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López football stadium in Santa Cruz, in an Army helicopter at 5:00 p.m., but their reception will be behind closed doors. The children will not be able to be in the stadium to experience the emotion of the arrival of the Kings, but they will be able to watch this on Televisión Canaria, which has organized a special program for this purpose. Without the usual Three Kings Parades, their reception will be followed by five Royal Progresses that repeat the formula of last January 5

Last year in Santa Cruz, the Three Kings instead made "Royal Progresses" through the five districts of the city, the exact routes kept secret until the last minute to avoid crowds forming. There were no stops, they wouldn't be distributing sweets and wouldn't be able to accept letters in person, just passing by in open top buses, with a police escort.

This year, the Three Wise Men will carry a geolocator in the capital of Tenerife, so children will be able to see the exact point they've reached and avoid long waits and crowds. The five retinues of the Magi can be followed on reyesmagosensantacruz.com

The Three Wise Men from the East decided to advance their arrival in La Laguna this year, by visiting seven areas on the outskirts of the city. Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar visited Las Chumberas, Valle Tabares, Santa Catalina, Padre Anchieta, Las Carboneras, San Roque and La Barranquera to greet the children and collect their letters, on Sunday, January 2, Monday 3 and Tuesday 4, so they could avoid crowds by spreading their magic.

La Orotava too have also again opted for the Paseo Real (Royal Progress), as in 2021, in which the Kings visited all the neighbourhoods of the municipality. There The Three Wise Men will land on Mount Teide and use the cable car to descend, then make their Royal Progress through all the districts of the municipality in open top cars.

The Three Kings will ride through the South of Tenerife in convertible cars

With the parades cancelled, municipalities prepare tours of the neighbourhoods. Alert level 3 for COVID-19 and the increase in infections in recent weeks have determined, for another year, the format of the arrival of Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar to the south of the island. Each municipality prepares receptions in which Royal Progress in convertible cars will predominate. It is recommended to watch them from balconies and windows.

In Arona, the planned events, which will begin at 3:00 p.m. with the delivery of the keys to the municipality to the Three Wise Men in the plenary hall of the council. From there, a tour in vehicles will begin, escorted by the Local Police and Civil Protection, through the varios nuclei of the municipality to end at 8:00 p.m. at the Los Cristianos Cultural Centre, although no event is planned to take place there to avoid crowds of public.

In Adeje, the delegation, which will travel in classic cars, will depart at 4:00 p.m. in a non-stop journey that will last about five hours (click this link for details of all the streets it will pass) and the journey will be made without stops. A vehicle of the volunteer firefighters will announce advance warning of the passage of the Kings through the neighbourhoods with enough time so that families can approach or can witness from the balcony.

San Miguel de Abona also bets on convertible cars, although the Kings will get up early in this municipality to greet the boys and girls. The tour will begin at 11.00 am in Guargacho and after visiting all the neighbourhoods, will conclude around 6.30 pm at El Frontón. The council has already delivered the keys to the Three Kings and recommends seeing the passage of the Magi from the East from balconies, doors and windows.

In Guía de Isora, convertible cars will begin to circulate at 5:00 p.m. in El Pozo, El Jaral and Acojeja, and after visiting all the neighbourhoods, will finish the round in the Guía town at 9:00 p.m., according to the schedules provided by the council, which reminds people that the Kings will not stop to take pictures nor collect letters or distribute sweets.

As in the rest of the municipalities, in Santiago del Teide there will be a Royal Progress. Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar will travel in vehicles through the municipality in a descending direction. The start is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. in the Valle de Arriba and its conclusion is planned for 7:15 p.m. in Puerto Santiago. The council warns that in order to watch the route of the royal procession it will be mandatory to wear masks and maintain a safety distance.
