Feria de Ganado (Livestock Fair) in La Orotava

The Las Dehesas enclosure brings together more than 1,200 head of cattle this Saturday

Today, Saturday, June 25, the popular and traditional Festivities Cattle Fair is celebrated in the La Orotava, in honor of the Patron Saints, San Isidro Labrador and Santa María de la Cabeza. In this edition, details the councillor for Agriculture and Livestock, Alexis Pacheco, there will be more than 1,200 head of cattle: a thousand goats and sheep, a hundred head of cattle, fifty horses and mules, as well as specimens of black pig and farmyard animals (hens and rabbits).

The livestock show, which will be held once again at the Las Dehesas site (Dehesa Alta / La Florida), will also feature various stalls related to the agricultural-livestock sector and crafts, as well as the participation of the La Orotava Farmer's Market. Among others, there will be stands of honey, artisanal cheeses, confectionery, traditional carpentry; embossing of metals; chiselling; leather goods; ceramics and pottery; basketry; puppets and dolls. In addition, there will be several exhibitions of hunting dogs and pigeons.

The little ones can enjoy the milking workshop. 

The reception of the animals will begin at 08:00 am, and the enclosure will open its doors at 09:00 am. At 11:00 a.m. the fair will begin with the traditional release of pigeons and the procession of the patron saints from their hermitage to the fairground, where the Holy Mass will take place, sung by the “Parranda San Miguel” Folkloric Group, and the subsequent blessing of the cattle.

Farmers participating in the livestock show compete for prizes in for the best heads and the best participating herds. There will be 21 prizes for the three categories: cattle, goats and horses. By awarding these prizes, the council wants to recognize the work of the men and women who care for and pamper their cattle day after day, which also represents the sustenance for many families in the Valley, and especially in these difficult times for the sector. 

After the act of exaltation to the ranchers and farmers, the return procession will take place, and upon arrival at Calvary, fireworks will be set off.

This Livestock Fair, due to the large influx of people who attend it, has its own Security Plan, and any incident will be controlled from Cecopal. In addition to the security forces, there will be the support of the Red Cross and Civil Protection, which will jointly ensure the safety of the thousands of people who will gather and the farmers and livestock that participate in the fair. All the cattle that are present will have the corresponding documentation in force, and the participating horses will be in perfect condition, thus highlighting the livestock sector of the Valle de La Orotava and the numerous family businesses that with tradition and great sacrifice exhibit their work, being clear that livestock has been, is and will be important for the economy of the municipality.
