A day of activities in the surroundings of the pier and the fish market

The Council of Granadilla de Abona, through the Employment and Local Development Agency (AEDL), has organised on Friday, July 15, a Día del Pescador (Fisherman's Day) in Los Abrigos, in collaboration with the Regulatory Council of the Abona Denomination of Origin and the San Blas and Virgen del Carmen Cultural Association, in the surroundings of the pier and fish market.

Head of the Local Development Agency, Yanira González, emphasises valuing the sector and the fishermen, and especially the town of Los Abrigos, the fishing enclave par excellence of Granadilla de Abona. She adds that the event, which also coincides with the celebration this weekend of the Day of the Virgen del Carmen, patron saint of sailors, is being held to combine different activities and projects related to the sector in the municipality, such as the fish market, the fishermen's association and employment workshops. The council invites the population in general to visit this point on the Granada coast, to enjoy the good gastronomy and participate in the events scheduled throughout the morning.

The program of activities, made up of workshops, presentations and live cooking shows, takes place from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The day will begin with the workshops, which will carry out a sample of related activities, such as sailors' knots. Starting at 11:00 a.m., a live cooking exhibition is scheduled to begin with seasonal fish products, by the Bahía de Los Abrigos and La Langostera restaurants, and a pairing with wines from the Abona Denomination of Origin, by the manager of the regulatory council, Manuel Rodríguez.

Throughout the morning there will be several presentations such as artisanal fishing by Manuel Díaz Marcelino, president of the fishermen's association of Granadilla de Abona; the Canary Maritime Training Centre by Rosario Vázquez López, who will explain the role played by this administration, and will conclude with a talk about the town's fish market, fish distributor for restaurants, food stores and fishmongers in the area, by its manager, Margarita Toledo Padilla.

The event is co-financed by MERCAMARKT and the European Social Fund.
