Tenerife in January 2019

January 1st is a public holiday for New Year. The Three Kings Parades take place in every town and village on the night of 5 January, the eve of Epiphany on 6th, which this year has a public holiday in leiu on Monday 7 January.

Municipal holidays in January 2019 are:
  • 18 January: Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza in La Guancha
  • 22 January: Festival of San Vicente in Los Realejos
The biggest celebrations are the Festival of San Sebastián in La Caleta, Adeje on 20 January 2019 and the Fiestas of San Antonio Abad in Arona, Buenavista del Norte, Chio, Gúímar, La Matanza de Acentejo, Los Silos, Tigaiga and La Florida (La Orotava). Many include Romerías and craft fairs

The Fiestas of San Sebastián are celebrated in the district of La Caleta in Adeje each year, this year falling on Sunday, 20 January 2019 and, in recent years has become one of the best attended events on the south of the island. The big day begins early in the morning, with Mass, after which the image leaves from the temple towards the sea, preceded by a retinue of horsemen, oxen, cows, goats, sheep, camels and dogs. This concludes in the Plaza de San Sebastián, where the parish priest proceeds with the blessing of the animals. In addition there is music and dancing, food and wines and Canarian handicrafts.

Sunday 27 January 2019, Buenavista del Norte hosts its annual Romería country and livestock fair in honour of San Antonio Abad (St Anthony the Abbot). On Sunday morning at 11am there will be mass in the Church of Nuestra Señora de Los Remedios, after which the icon of San Antonio Abad will be taken in procession for the formal blessing of the livestock. Around 500 animals (goats, cows, horses) will gather in the Urbanización Las Marinas. At 2pm, the Romería commences its journey through the streets, ending at the Plaza de Los Remedios, with dancing to Orquesta Teymar.

Feria de Ganado y Romería en honor a San Antonio Abad 2019

Güímar also celebrates it's fiestas in honour of San Antonio Abad with the Craft Fair in the Plaza de San Pedro and Farmers' Market starting from 9am on Sunday 27 January 2019, as well as the Livestock, pets and exotic animals on show. There are kids' entertainments from 10am, an exhibition of birds of prey at 11am in the Plaza del Obispo and mass at 11:45am in the Church of de Santo Domingo de Guzmán. At 1pm the blessing of the animals takes place and the procession leaves from the church and makes its way through the streets, accompanied by dance troops, folk groups, the town band, etc. From 2:30pm there is dancing to Orquestra Tropin in the Plaza Santa Domingo.

Güímar celebra mañana San Antonio Abad

On Sunday 27 January 2019 (from 2pm) the Romería de La Florida in Honour of Saint Anthony the Abbot and Our Lady of the Virgin of Hope in La Florida, La Orotava takes place, but these fiestas are also famous for their Gran Puchero, (Big Stew) which this year, is being served on Saturday 26 January 2019Last year, more than 60 huge stainless steel cauldrons were used for the largest puchero in the Canary Islands. For this gastronomic celebration; 80 kilos of of chickpeas, 500 kilos of bacon and ribs, 600 kilos of cabbages, 1,000 chayote and 110 chickens were used, among other ingredients. Over 7,000 people attended. Also on Saturday, from 10am is the annual Cattle Fair.

Almond Blossom Routes 2019

The ever-popular Rutas de Almendros en Flor (Almond Blossom Routes) 2019 are several and run from 26 January to 16 February 2019. More information for these walks, part of the cultural programme organised by the Town Hall of Santiago del Teide, can be obtained from El Cardón NaturExperience, either online, or at the Hotel Meliã Hacienda del Conde, Buenavista del Norte (Monday - Friday 10am - 2pm).   • Saturday, 26 January 9am - Short general walk (4 hours, medium difficulty, minimum age 8)
  • Saturday, 26 January 9am - Long general walk (5 hours, high difficulty, minimum age 12)
  • Sunday, 27 January 9am - Family Route (3 hours, low difficulty, minimum age 6)
  • Saturday, 2 February 9am - A day in the countryside among the almonds with picnic (4 hours, medium difficulty, minimum age 8)
  • Sunday, 3 February 9am - Tourist route (4 hours, medium difficulty, minimum age 12) with guide in Spanish, English and German
  • Saturday 9 February 5:30pm - Nocturnal route legends among the almonds includes theatrical performance. Overcoat and torch required. (3.5 hours, medium difficulty, minimum age 12) 
  • Sunday 10 February 9am - "Without Barriers" route for the disabled, the elderly and their carers. Sign language translation (Spanish) available, as well as a species of sedan chair for those with mobility issues. (3.5 hours, low-medium difficulty, minimum age 6) 
  • Saturday, 16 February 9am - Lovers route for couples over 18 years, includes artistic actuations (whatever that means, but open mind might be a good idea) and a photo call (3 hours, low difficulty, min age 18)
Includes guide (in Spanish only, except where noted), insurance and transport.

Booking is essential as there are only restricted numbers allowed on each walk. The price for each walk is 5 Euros per person.
