Los Joroperos won first prize for Interpretation in the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife 2023 at the Comparsas Contest, held last night (11 Feb) at the Tenerife International Centre for Trade Fairs and Congresses, attended by an audience of more than four thousand. Their win coincides with the group's return to the contest after two years of hiatus due to COVID-19 and with its 50th anniversary.

The second prize for Interpretation was obtained by Los Cariocas, while Tropicana was classified in third place. Fourth prize was awarded to Río Orinoco.

In the Presentation section for the best costume, the first prize went to the comparsa Los Rumberos, with the fantasy “Britania”, designed by Santi Castro. Second to Los Joroperos, and Los Cariocas third. Tabajaras received highly commended.

The awards were presented by Councillor for Fiestas, Alfonso Cabello, and the Councillors for Culture, Equality and Diversity and the Anaga district, Gladis de León, Purificación Dávila and Inmaculada Fuentes, as well as the Councillor for Works and Infrastructures, Dámaso Arteaga.

On this occasion, the groups that participated in the contest were Rumberos, Río Orinoco, Tropicana, Joroperos, Cariocas, Tabajaras, Danzarines Canarios, Abenaura and Bahía Bahitiare.

The jury for this year's contest was made up of Patricia Hodgson Ravina, a graduate in Fine Arts, painter and art curator; María Polín Ruiz, a graduate in Fine Arts, and Ana Juárez, creative designer of Mefaldas Tú. Maite Marcos Muñoz, dance choreographer; Raquel Caurín Domingo, professional choreographer and dancer; Pol Soto I Martin (Pol Soto), dancer; Jose Luis Valero Barceló (Valero), dancer and choreographer; Olena Shmelona (Aliona Kvitka), international singer; María Sabrina Lemus Carmenatti (Sabrina Lemus), singing teacher, singer and choir director; Juan Carlos Malagón Hernández, musicologist and arranger, and Sergio la Guardia González (Sergio Branic), musician, composer and arranger.

The Comparsas Contest of the current edition of the Carnival was offered by RTVC and presented by the journalists María Doménech and Guillermo García.
