Güimar's traditional ribbon dance

Danza de Güimar

The "Danza de Güimar" (Danza de las cintas - Ribbon Dance, like a Maypole Dance) in Güímar, dates back to the 17th Century. Apparently, a letter exists concerning the event from the year 1788. The dance is traditionally danced by 12 boys (although in the early 20th Century, adults danced it), around one man holding the ribboned pole. The dancers go out again in the procession at around mid-day, June 29th, part of the ongoing Fiestas de San Pedro 2008: fiestas for the Patron of Güimar: San Pedro (Saint Peter).
