Something for the weekend: Mother's Day and Labour Day

Santiago del Teide, Iglesia de San Fernando

This Sunday, 1st May coincide Día de la Madre (Mother's Day in Spain) and Día del Trabajo - more fully entitled Día Internacional de los Trabajadores - (Workers' Day or Labour Day - labour as in work, not as in birth), the latter of which will be celebrated with a day off work (in leiu) on Monday, 2nd May, which is a National Public Holiday.

Mother's Day is going to be celebrated in an unique manner with a Fiesta Intercultural India-Canaria (which hardly requires translating), running from 5:30pm to 9:30pm in the plaza in Santiago del Teide, with elements from both cultures including folk music, dance, theatre and a festival of lights as part of the fiestas for the Virgen del Rosario, patron of the municipality and organised by the town hall along with various organisations from the Comunidad Hindú de Canarias.

Día de la Madre 2016 en Santiago del Teide

Elsewhere on the island, examples include La Orotava on Saturday, 30th April and in Adeje until May 1st there are "commercial campaigns" (as if you could miss the advertising) aimed at getting you to buy gifts, of course, but also helping to dynamise local economies and often with some special entertainments thrown in around shopping areas.

Ten Favourite Tenerife Rock and Sea Pools and other stories

Ten Favourite Tenerife Rock and Sea Pools
There are lots of rock and sea pools around the coast of Tenerife that act as natural or semi-natural swimming pools. Most, but not all, tend to be found along the north coast. Some are well known, others are way off the beaten tourist trail. These are ten of our favourites.

Teleférico closures in May
The Tenerife Cabildo has announced that the Teleférico (Teide Cable Car) will be closed for maintenance from 9 to 12 May inclusive, and again on 26 and 27 May.

Understanding Weather Alerts on Tenerife
We bang on about weather alerts not to be sensationalist about things, the weather IS near perfect most of the time. But every year people die in the Canary Islands because they’ve been given bad advice, ignored what the weather is doing or haven’t realised extreme and dangerous weather doesn’t just involve high winds and heavy rain.

Tenerife to star in pilot of new ITV series “The Holiday Show”
Tenerife was the location chosen last week to record the pilot episode of a new ITV series “The Holiday Show”. The Tenerife Cabildo is delighted that we’re going to be the subject of the pilot episode of a series expected to draw in some 42m viewers per episode.

An unconfirmed “technical problem” with the Pirámide de Arona sees the venue cancel several performances
Various productions have been cancelled at the Pirámide de Arona concert hall including the Alan Parsons concert last Friday, and several performances of the Carmen Mota Malizia show. Some people [...] were left unaware of the cancellations until after they’d turned up because they’d booked through agencies which had not recorded their contact details.

Roads in Tenerife slammed by Government
The Canarian Government has criticised the Cabildo of Tenerife for the standard of roads on the islands, after a string of complaints. Across the archipelago the standard of roads has been slammed, with the government saying more needs to be done with the 51 million euro budget that is allocated this year for the islands road networks.

Fenautica 2016 in Las Galletas
The fourth “Guanche Cup” regatta, Fenautica 2016, will be held on 4 and 5 June in Las Galletas. The previous three occasions have been great successes, and this year is likely to be so as well. There will be a huge marine fair with many exhibitor stalls, food counters, music, competing yachts, charter craft, and much more. It’s a genuine sea fiesta which organizers hope will appeal to residents, locals, visitors, tourists, adults, children, and sports people.

Traditional Fiestas in Granadilla de Abona

Iglesia de San Antonio de Padua (Granadilla de Abona)
Stay at the Hotel Rural Senderos de Abona (above left in picture)

On the 24th, 25th and 26th July, during the Fiestas of San Juan y Santa Ana in the district of Las Vegas, the Danza de las Varas, one of the most curious dances in the Canarian archipelago takes place. The steps, the costumes the dancers and the decorations of their poles are dissimilar to any other dance taking place on the islands.

In June the Fiestas Mayores in honor of San Antonio de Padua and Nuestra Señora del Rosario take place. On the 13th June, fiestas in honour of San Antonio de Padua, patron of Granadilla de Abona, are celebrated with a romería that culminates in a dance in the town's main square.

The 24th September, in El Médano, fiestas for the Virgen de las Mercedes de Rojas are celebrated with a maritime procession.

Other celebrations taking place in this clearly very fun-loving municipality include:

Fiestas of La Milagrosa, in El Salto at the end of January.
Fiestas of San José, in Yaco on 19th March.
Fiestas of La Cruz in Granadilla town on 3rd May.
Fiestas of San Isidro Labrador in San Isidro on 15th May.

Fiestas of Sagrado Corazón in Los Cuervos on 22nd June.
Fiestas of San Juan Bautista in El Salto on 24th June.

Fiestas of Nuestra Señora del Carmen in Chimiche, Casablanca and Los Abrigos on 16th July.
Fiestas of Santa Ana in Las Vegas on 26th July.

Weather Forecast for Tenerife from to 25 April to 1 May

Tenerife Sunset

The forecast for the final week of April remains more or less the same as in previous weeks with a lot of sunshine forecast with some cloudy spells and light showers over the weekend. If things pan out the same as recent weeks that should mean mostly warm, sunny weather.

Something for the weekend: Romería de San Marcos Evangelista

La iglesia de San Marcos Evangelista, Tegueste

Romería de San Marcos Evangelista in Tegueste

This Sunday, 24th April, from 1pm, the Romería in Honor of San Marcos Evangelista (St. Mark the Evangelist) takes place in Tegueste.

This famous pilgrimage is one of the most important in the archipelago with the participation of 23 carts (in the form of boats), the Dance of the Flowers and a large number of bands and folk dancers from Tenerife and other islands. As every year thousands are expected to flock to witness this unique example of Canarian tradition.

Feeling At Home In El Puertito and other stories in Tenerife this week

Boats in El Puertito

Feeling At Home In El Puertito
Here’s a confession, I’ve never been to El Puertito before, I’ve been in the sea from a boat in the cove of this Adeje beauty spot but not ashore. It was high time to put that right so I caught the Titsa bus to La Caleta to walk along the coast.

New Open Air Cinema in South Tenerife
As from 22 April, the newly opened Open Air Cinema Tenerife in the Costa Adeje will be showing films outdoors … and headsets will allow the audience to listen in a range of languages including English.

Guia de Isora ayuntamiento evacuates and cordons off Alcalá building
I suspect there will be a few more of these now. Guía de Isora ayuntamiento has ordered the evacuation and closure of the three-storey bar-restaurant El Obrero, in Avda Los Pescadores, the main road through Alcalá, after cracks which had appeared in the facade were deemed to be potentially dangerous. The three families who resided in the building have been relocated, and works will start to investigate the structural integrity of the building on Monday.

Minute’s silences this lunchtime throughout Tenerife in respect of those who died in the building collapse
A large crowd turned out this lunchtime to pay their respects with a minute’s silence outside Los Cristianos Cultural Centre. The families of the victims were there, with members of the rescue operation, security and emergency teams, as well as the council itself, and three mayors from southern municipalities … and that’s without counting the very many individual members of the public who wanted to express their shock, grief and solidarity.

Our Ten Favourite Tenerife Hotel Rooms
These are those hotel rooms (in no particular order) that have offered something different, some kind of wow feature which has made them lodge themselves in our memories as favourites.

Weather Forecast for Tenerife from to 18 to 24 April

Tenerife landscape with clouds.

Once again the forecast is for a week where there’s a mix of sun, cloud and showers with the south and south west seeing more sunshine than the north and north east. The week starts with a yellow alert for rain across all of Tenerife (Monday only) and sure enough it has just started in the north. A quick scan of webcams shows grey clouds and wet pavements in southern resort areas as well; although, Santa Cruz is looking bright and there’s evidence of breaks in the clouds in other areas. If recent patterns are anything to go by, there should be plenty of sunny spells.

Carnival – any ideas? And other stories this week in Tenerife

Apoteosis del Carnaval, Santa Cruz de Tenerife 2013

Carnival – any ideas?
THIS year’s Santa Cruz Carnival was universally judged to have been one of the best in recent years. So organisers are keen to maintain the standard for 2017. However, they need help. Since 1987 the Carnival in Santa Cruz has always had a theme – and the next one could be your idea!

XIV Feria del Libro de Adeje 2016
The annual Adeje Feria del Libro (book fair) will take place between 15 and 23 April in the car park of the Municipal School of Music and Dance in Las Torres. As always there will be a range of book stalls, events and exhibitions, and readings, all between 10am and 10pm. The particular focus this year will be Shakespeare and Cervantes, since it is the 400th anniversary of the death of both authors, who died within a fortnight of each other in 1616.

XXVII Feria del Libro Arona 2016
Arona Ayuntamiento’s Culture Department has announced its XXVII Feria del Libro Arona 2016. The book fair will be held over 14, 15 and 16 April in the Plaza del Pescador outside the Cultural Centre, starting at 7pm on the 14th. On Friday 15th it will open at 5pm, and on the Saturday, at 11am. As usual, there will be musical and theatrical performances, handicrafts workshops, and many other entertainments.

More Than a Vegetarian Restaurant, Review of Hay Lo Que Hay in Puerto de la Cruz
It’s not a posh place and the food isn’t fancy, but the whole dining experience is one of homely warmness. There’s a nice vibe even if you’re the only diners. Hay Lo Que Hay means ‘there is what there is’ and what there is, is delicious.

Weather Forecast for Tenerife from to 11 to 17 April

Sun and clouds over Las Cañadas del Teide

The forecast is looking much the same as last week with a mix of sun, cloud and showers with not a great difference on any coast. The south west might be slightly brighter but there’s not a lot in it. When this is the case it usually means high cloud which robs Teide National Park of its clear blue skies as well and sure enough, cloud and rain is predicted on high as well. Possibly the most interesting thing about the weather next week is that there could be more snow on Teide from midweek onwards.

Spring concerts, how to be a Time Lord and more stories

Mr & Mrs Canarian Lizard doing what comes naturally in the Spring.

It’s all About Timing on Tenerife
If you want to fit into the Canario way of life, you have to align your timings. In our case that means eating and generally having fun Canario style, planning things Northern European fashion.

The Old North of Tenerife
When people roll out the ‘north of Tenerife is full of old people’ chestnut it says a lot more about them and where they choose to hang out than it does about the reality of life in towns like Puerto de la Cruz.

Güímar Pyramids Ethnographic Park introduces new attraction, the Sustainable Garden
The Tenerife Cabildo has announced the opening of the latest attraction at the Güímar Pyramids Ethnographic Park, the Sustainable Garden, a 1.000 m² space which reproduces the environment of a Canarian water course through a barranco with endemic species – did you know that eels, the only freshwater fish here, used to live in barrancos? It is beautiful, and another reason to visit this lovely space just outside Güímar town.

Teleférico closure for maintenance dates
To assist anyone planning a visit, the Tenerife Cabildo has announced that the Teide Teleférico will be closed for maintenance works on 18-19 April, 9-12 May, and 26-27 May.

VIII Subida a El Tanque
Spanish report on last weekend's El Tanque Hillclimb, but the report includes some spectacular images of the cars and the breathtaking views.

Spring open-air concerts throughout Guía de Isora
Guía de Isora Ayuntamiento has announced a series of spring music concerts in the open air throughout the municipality. The four concerts, performed by the two municipal groups, Agrupación Musical Isorana and Virgen de la Luz, will be held on the four Sundays in April in the most populous towns in the borough, starting with Alcalá, followed by Playa San Juan, Guía casco and finally Chío.

The Passion draws huge numbers to Adeje again
THOUSANDS of spectators, including those from all over Europe and beyond, poured into Adeje on Good Friday to witness the borough’s 20th annual version of The Passion, along the Calle Grande. And they brought along their own passion for the spectacular event, which spanned at least two hours. More than 300 people participated in the staging of the last days and death of Jesus Christ. And Mayor Jose Miguel Rodríguez Fraga  congratulated all the amateur actors.

Weather Forecast for Tenerife 4 to 10 April

Santa Cruz de la Palma glistening in the rain.

It’s looking like it might be another unsettled week with a mix of sun, cloud and rain forecast for just about everywhere. There should be sunny spells on most days but Wednesday and Thursday could be particularly grey and damp. The south should see less rain than the north but it doesn’t look like a great one anywhere… unless you’re a farmer. Best area for sunshine, as it so often is, should be the south west of the island. However, it’s got the feel of being one of those weeks where the outlook could change as the week progresses.

Something for the weekend: El Tanque Hillclimb / Festival of Colours

Route of the El Tanque Hillclimb

This weekend some more exciting rally action for you with the 8th Subida a El Tanque (El Tanque Hillclimb) on Saturday, 2nd April, combining breathtaking views over the north Tenerife coast with adrenaline-inducing motor sport. 25 teams are taking part over a distance of 4.5 kilometers with the starting line located at kilometer 2 of the TF-421 road - average gradient around 6%. This is how the climb looks at normal car speed.

Holi Festival of Colours in Adeje

Then on Sunday, 3rd April join the Indian Association Tenerife South and Tenerife Indian Cultural Center in Fañabé to celebrate Holi, the Festival of Colours.

This Spring festival or Festival of Colors is an ancient Hindu religious celebration, primarily it celebrated in India and Nepal. Enjoy games with coloured powder and other aspects of Indian culture such as food, music and dancing.

April is Wine Month in Tequeste

April is Wine Month in Tequeste

April 2016 is once more, Wine Month in Tegueste, with the eleventh consecutive edition of one of the most important programs to take place, boosting this rural area.

There are a variety of activities taking place between 1st and 30th April, at the Open Commercial Area, the Farmer's and Artisan Market, wineries and bars. The program includes activities related to nature, culture and gastronomy, including the VIII Wine and Tapas Route that will involve a total of 26 bars and restaurants of the municipality.

Full program (in Spanish): XI Abril, Mes del Vino 2016 en Tegueste

Tenerife Fiestas in April 2016

Church of San Marcos, Icod de los Vinos, Tenerife

With Easter having been fairly early this year, April is a quiet month, fiesta-wise.

There are no public holidays in April and only one Municipal holiday on 25th April for the Festivity of San Marcos Evangelista in both Icod de los Vinos and Tegueste.

There will undoubtedly be Fiestas in Icod (programme yet to be confirmed) and the Romeria of San Marcos Evangelista takes place in Tegueste on the last Sunday in April, which this year is April 24th, while the population of Almáciga in the district of Anaga will celebrate fiestas for their patron, Virgen de Begoña, during the last week of April.
