Tenerife Weather Forecast From 31 October to 6 November

Puerto de la Cruz, looking inland from the seawater pools at the Lago Martiánez

Whenever I read comments which say things like ‘I’ve been coming to Tenerife in November for years and never seen rain’ I automatically think ‘you’ve been bloody lucky’. The forecast for the coming week is exactly the sort of forecast we expect at some point in November. There should be a lot of sun during the first half of the week but a storm in the North Atlantic passing to the west of the archipelago will bring unstable weather from Wednesday night which means temperatures will drop slightly and rain which will probably affect everywhere on the island over the weekend. I say probably because the path of these Atlantic storms can shift which can result in changes to the forecast. Once again it looks like there will be snow on Teide this week.

My ten favourite Tenerife sculptures and other stories

Fishing boat sculpture, Homenaje al chicharrero, outside the Nuestra Señora de África market in Santa Cruz.

Feria Tricontinental de Artesanía in Santa Cruz
Santa Cruz’s Recinto Ferial will be host to this year’s Feria Tricontinental de Artesanía, which will be held between 29 October and 6 November. The artisan fair brings together arts and crafts from three continents – Africa, America and Europe. On previous occasions, this fair has attracted over 100,000 visitors, and organizers say that they again expect to have some 180 artisans from 25 countries displaying their arts and crafts at the fair, as well as providing activities, displays and exhibitions.

Feria Tricontinental de Artesanía

Tuesday, 1 November, is a public holiday
Just a reminder that next Tuesday, 1 November, is a public holiday for Todos los Santos (All Saints Day). Banks, most offices and many shops will be closed. Do bear in mind, too, that with the day being a Tuesday, many will take a puente, i.e. take the Monday off too to make a long weekend, so some businesses will be closed on the Monday as well.

My ten favourite Tenerife sculptures
We’re big fans of getting to know sculptures in the places we visit. As well as usually being visually interesting, they often provide an insight into a location. I’m not talking about the grand monuments to famous historical figures. I’m talking about the ones which relate to obscure events, local heroes nobody knows about outside of their own town, or sculptures which are just downright bizarre.

Understanding Tenerife weather alerts, costeros
There is one weather alert on Tenerife which regularly confuses people. As a result this can result in weather conditions being misreported in English. It’s when there is an alert for costeros. Translated it means coastal and its full title is fenómenos costeros.

Teide Sunset & Stars excursion now offers Michelin-level dining experience
The excursion includes a return ticket for the Cable Car outside its normal operating hours and a glass of sparkling wine from the Altos de Trevejos winery, one of the highest in Spain, and drunk at one of the highest possible venues within Spain, at an altitude of 3,555m. The accompanying gourmet-style Canarian dinner will itself then be accompanied by the best volcanic wines, all rounded off by stargazing with long-range telescopes and expert guides  to Tenerife’s night sky.

The great escape, review of the Meliá Hacienda del Conde
This is one of the areas on Tenerife where noblemen were given choice lands following the conquest of the island and the Meliá Hacienda del Conde fits in perfectly with the grand haciendas which are common in these parts. It’s not for people seeking purpose-built resorts with all the facilities, this is a hotel for people who love culture, nature, scenery, tranquillity and a touch of class.

Puerto de la Cruz’s Noche en Blanco rescheduled for 10 December
Puerto de la Cruz’s Noche en Blanco, which was suspended on Saturday night because of the weather was not cancelled and will take place after all. The Ayuntamiento has announced that it will now take place on Saturday, 10 December. As in the case of La Laguna, Puerto de la Cruz’s Noche en Blanco is an event that will fill the town with entertainment and activities as well as open shops, in an attempt to boost the area’s economy, and give shoppers a chance to get ready for Christmas.

XIX Festival of Theatre and Dance in Adeje
Adeje’s annual Festival de Teatro y Danza returns for another season of performances ranging from the classical to the avant garde between 4 and 26 November, with tickets available from this Wednesday at the town’s Cultural Centre. Perhaps not to be missed is the free street theatre version of Romeo and Juliet which will be performed in the streets of Adeje town starting from the plaza de España, in memory of the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death.

Tenerife Weather Forecast From 24 to 30 October

Cloudy over Puerto de la Cruz

It looks like it is going to be a wet and gloomy week across Tenerife with a yellow level weather for rain in the south and south west on Monday and Tuesday and in the east on Tuesday whilst the north has a yellow alert for high waves on Monday and Tuesday. There could be thunder and lightning at times and Teide looks as though it’s going to have its first white coating of the season. Although there will be sunny spells as well, it mostly looks as though the only difference between areas will be the intensity of the rain. Things should brighten up for the second half of the week but it could be Saturday before we see normal service resumed.

5 Unexpected Adventures in Tenerife and other stories

Trekking the Teide National Park

5 Unexpected Adventures in Tenerife
U.S. travelers are discovering Tenerife’s secrets — such as lush mountains, vast hiking trails, 43 protected nature areas and more.

Ten Highs and Lows of Living on Tenerife
After 13 years of living on Tenerife, it’s fair to say that the highs have outweighed the lows by quite some considerable margin, otherwise we wouldn’t still be living here. But it hasn’t all been plain sailing.

Celebrating the “medianías” – arts & craft and gastronomy fair in Vilaflor
Alongside the official act there will be a fair with local craft and agricultural produce from the nine different boroughs, children’s activities, guided walks in Vilaflor, theatre performances and different activities throughout the weekend.

Good value doesn’t always mean cheap on Tenerife
For me a ‘Euro a pint’ sign translates in my head to ‘watery, poor quality lager’ and I walk on by. Similarly, a while ago I saw a sign on a café near us advertising burgers for €1. My first thought was ‘they’ll be garbage.’ Ironically, there’s not a great difference in price between those Euro burgers and the delicious beefy monsters served in my favourite burger joint on Tenerife, La Oficina near El Sauzal, which are around €2.75. But I’m willing to bet there was a Teide National Park sized crater of a difference when it came to quality.

VII Subida a Guía de Isora mountain racing rally hillclimb.
The VII Subida a Guía de Isora rally will be held on Saturday and Sunday, 29 and 30 October. The race, which will count towards next year’s Spanish national mountain race championships, will be held on the TF463 between Playa San Juan and Guía de Isora town.

Laurel forest photography exhibition in Adeje Cultural Centre
Adeje Ayuntamiento has announced a fascinating photography exhibition about the wonderful laurel forests in the Canaries. The exhibition, of photos by José Juan Hernández, will be open to the public in the exhibition salon in the Adeje Cultural Centre on weekdays from 9am to 8pm until 25 October. Entry is free.

Why Playa Paraiso is and isn’t located in Costa Adeje
... things are about to change. The opening of the Hard Rock Hotel will be the catalyst which transforms Playa Paraiso. Already its name is being mentioned more and more in social media circles. People are increasingly asking where Playa Paraiso is. And that in itself is already causing confusion.

Charity Country Gospel Concert in aid of Adeje Foodbank and Noah’s Ark homeless association
Pastor Ken Cumming has announced the 2nd charity Country Gospel Concert, which will be held in the Adeje Cultural Centre on Sunday, 30 October at 7.30pm . Tickets for the event cost €1 plus 1kg of non perishable food (or more, if you like!), and all proceeds will be donated to the Adeje Foodbank and to the work of Noah’s Ark, an asociación (so a genuine charity) supporting the homeless living on the streets in the south of Tenerife.

Waylaid By A Tenerife West Coast Wander
Seagulls packed the breakwater that was exposed by the low tide and a small group of kayaks tailed behind their leader like ducklings following their mother. Aah yes it was a delightful morning as I made Playa San Juan my kick off point for a stroll along the west coast of Tenerife.

Tenerife Weather Forecast From 17 to 23 October

West coast from Teno

The outlook for the next week is for sunshine on all coasts every day but some parts will see more cloudy spells than others with the north, east and west looking just a little bit sunnier than the south. Sunday looks as though it could be a grey day with rain just about everywhere. The start of the week should be very warm with temperatures dropping a degree a day as the week progresses.

The best Tenerife walking and other stories

Mountain path, Guajara, Teide National Park

From pine forests to volcanic plains, the best Tenerife walking
We normally only take to the Tenerife trail a couple of times over summer months. Mostly we wait until autumn arrives, bringing slightly less hot temperatures, before getting in any decent walking on the island.

Third Charity Drag Gala in aid of breast cancer association Amate
The third Charity Drag Gala in aid of breast cancer association Amate will be held in Los Cristianos’ Infanta Leonor Auditorio at 9pm on Monday 31 October. Tickets will be available shortly from the Cultural Centre and the auditorium’s cafe.

La Laguna Noche en Blanco 2016
It’s now an established annual run-up-to-Christmas event that attracts people to La Laguna in their hundreds of thousands, and this year’s Noche en Blanco will take place on Saturday, 26 November. The previous occasions have been enormous successes, and this year looks set to be just as brilliant, with a wide range of activities including street theatre, live music in the open air, shops open all night, street stalls, food, drink, church recitals, cultural events in every historic building or museum with tour guides giving different sorts of guided tours at intervals throughout the night – it is a real experience not to be missed.

Amy Winehouse tribute show with original band members at Magma Centre in December
There will be any number of Amy Winehouse fans in Tenerife, and now FOREVER AMY can be seen at the Magma Centre at 9.30pm on Friday, 9 December.

Five Great Tenerife Buffet Breakfasts
As breakfast buffets go it was a pretty good one. The experience got me thinking about other good Tenerife breakfast buffets, especially the ones which stood out for offering something a little bit different. These are five which have stuck in the memory.

Tenerife Weather Forecast From 10 to 16 October

Clouds over the north

The outlook is for weather that looks more in line with what we normally get on Tenerife towards the end of October when the season really changes. So, although the sun will shine most places every day, there could be a lot of cloud throughout the week, a chance of rain in the south and south west on Tuesday morning and more rain pretty much everywhere over the weekend.

Oktoberfest returns to Costa Adeje and other stories

Oktoberfest returns to the Costa Adeje
Beer will flow and the smells and sounds of traditional German food and music will fill the air next to the sea in the plaza next to CC Salytien in the Costa Adeje between 1 and 11pm next weekend, Friday to Sunday, 7-9 October.

Adeje Fiestas Patronales 2016
Adeje’s Fiestas Patronales in honour of the Virgen de la Encarnación start this Saturday, 1 October, with a whole range of events being held until 16 October. These patronal fiestas culminate with the romeria on Sunday, 16 October, a traditional procession of the virgin’s statue with the famous carts pulled by oxen along Calle Grande, and dancers, music, food, and many other cultural touches beingrounded off by the traditional fireworks and entertainment.

Scientists and authorities combine to reassure public about seismic cluster
The Instituto Geográfico Nacional for its part has concluded that the “micro-tremors” are of a volcanic nature, and that although their exact cause is unknown, their behaviour is within the range of “normal” for an active volcano.

Tipping? It’s such a poor habit in Spain
A survey carried out in August about Spain’s hospitality sector shows that nearly three-quarters of customers tip less than 5% of the bill, while just 3% express their gratitude for the service with tips of between 10% and 20%.

Two sides of the music scene on Tenerife
Over the years we’ve seen countless excellent Canarian bands and singers. But, despite their talent, their names are unlikely to ever appear on the list of nominees for the Tenerife Entertainment Awards as those are aimed at acts on the cabaret circuit rather than the island wide live music scene.

British Government unveils plans to give expats lifelong right to vote in UK elections
The British Government has published detailed plans on how it will deliver its commitment to return the right to vote in parliamentary elections to all expats. To what will be inevitable criticism that it comes too late to those who wished to vote against Brexit ...

Responsible whale and dolphin watching with the Blue Boat flag
When booking an excursion, Turismo says, look for boats bearing the “Blue Boat” flag.

All Ship Shape In Santa Cruz
Any excuse and I’m off to Santa Cruz, there’s so much going on, that was definitely the case as I called in for two big events and still ended up gazing at the ebb andd flow of the ships at the port. My first visit was for the Seatrade Cruise Med trade show at the Recinto Ferial, with 153 stalls and some interesting forums there was plenty for me to dive into.

Wine-growers hit by a harvest nightmare
WE have heard a few stories recently about the problems at Tenerife’s vineyards. And now, it seems, the full extent of their troubles are worse than first thought. The Island’s official regulator has confirmed that 2016 is now expected to be one of the worst harvests in years.

Arona beaches back to their best
As Arona’s mayor Mena promised, the municipality’s beaches have been treated as a priority, and not only have they recovered their precious Blue Flags, playa de Las Vistas has now also regained Aenor’s Universal Accessibility Certificate, a distinction that the council says guarantees equal opportunities for the use and enjoyment of the beach.

Christmas programmes 2016-2017
And the prize for this year’s first Christmas announcement goes to … the Magma Centre, which has announced that there will be a Christmas ice rink throughout November, December and January.
