Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival 1994

Maria Candelaria Rodriguez, Carnival Queen 1994

Can it really be 25 years since the first time I went to the Coso (main parade) of carnival in Santa Cruz de Tenerife? The queen that year was Maria Candelaria Rodriguez, with a costume entitled "Diva", by Marcos Marrero, representing Casinos de Tenerife.

For Canrival 1994 the theme was Atlántida (Atlantis). Wonder if anyone else has noticed that this year's scenery, the theme for which is Las profundidades marinas (The Deep Sea) also features Poseidon with his trident on the right hand side of the stage?

This was back in the day when the staging was erected and the galas held in the open air in the Plaza de España, before Herzog + de Meuron redesigned the plaza in 2008 and the penultimate carnival staged there before the Centro Internacional de Ferias y Congresos de Tenerife (The Tenerife International Centre for Trade Fairs and Congresses), where the staging is erected and the contests and galas are held now, was opened in 1996.

Twenty-five years ago I travelled the length of the carnival route, in costume, on the bonnet of an open-topped car. This afternoon, I have a ringside seat for the parade.
