Fiestas fin de año 2015 - End of year Parties in Tenerife

Tenerinfo have details of various Fiestas del fin de año - End of year parties in Tenerfe, starting with one in the Plaza de España in Adeje commencing at 23:00 hrs tonight.

There will be an announcer to welcome in the New Year to the sound of the church bells of St. Ursula in a celebration that promises to be a meeting point for both residents and tourists alike. Two DJ's and two orchestras “Maquinaria Band” and “Sensación Gomera” will be providing the musical entertainment.

If Adeje isn't the place for you, there are certain to be celebrations in most towns and villages, of varying size, but distinctly similar format, almost invariably including fireworks on the stroke of midnight. Just head for the central plaza and be sure to be wearing brand new red underwear and new clothes! Just some of the other parties are listed below:

Better Than Ever, Tenerife’s Great Northern Resort of Puerto de la Cruz

I read a report in a Tenerife English language rag about declining tourist figures in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife’s main northern tourist resort. As the date I read this was 28 December I wondered if it was a ‘fake’ news story, especially as the report contradicted official statistics. 28 December is Día de los Inocentes, the Spanish equivalent of April Fool’s Day.

Tenerife tops searches for New Year's Eve holidays from UK

Nearly one in five people in the UK searching for a holiday break over the new year period eyed up a trip to the Canary Islands, according to data provided exclusively to the Guardian by TravelSupermarket.

The figures also reveal that the largest island in the region, Tenerife, was considered more than any other world destination for a break on 31 December.

Weather Forecast for Tenerife from 28 December to 3 January

It’s looking good for a clear New Year’s Eve and a sunny New Year’s Day, in fact it’s looking like sunshine all week everywhere on Tenerife with only some light cloud mixed in with the sunshine in places over the weekend. Temperatures might be slightly cooler with the first half of the week seeing mid 20sC in coastal areas and the second half seeing temperatures in the low 20s. But remember these are shade temperatures. It’s much warmer in the sunshine.

The Best Beaches on Tenerife For You

To point someone in the direction of a beach that would suit it’s important to know what their personal preferences are. Some people like resort beaches with facilities, bars and restaurants galore. Others like their beaches remote and wild. Like choosing which Tenerife resort would suit someone, it’s horses for courses. With that in mind, here’s our choice of the best Tenerife beaches to suit various preferences.

The Art of Christmas in San Miguel

It’s not all about mini Papa Noels (Santa Claus) abseiling down balconies, some of the best festive decorations in the south of Tenerife have more of a homemade look and at least a hint of the true meaning of Christmas. With Kings Day, Los Reyes, celebrated on 6 January it also keeps the mood bubbling long after the hangovers kick in back home.

Granadilla And San Miguel Are Winter Wonderlands

It’s official, I’m still in love with Tenerife. I woke up this morning with a mild hangover (crap first line for a blues song) and decided to go hunting with my camera in Granadilla and San Miguel. It was one of those trips where the journey was as uplifting as the destination, and not just because the 45 minute ride was just 1.90 euros on my Bono bus ticket.

Christmas in Tenerife

Weather Forecast for Tenerife from 21 to 27 December

Although the forecast is for rain everywhere at some point on Monday, Christmas week should be warm and sunny across Tenerife with Xmas Eve and Xmas Day looking typically sunny. There’s a slight chance of showers by the weekend (25/35C) but overall it’s looking great.

A Visit to the Iberoamerican Art Museum in La Orotava

A trip to La Orotava is always a pleasure and quite often a surprise. No matter how many times I go, there’s always something else to see and depending on the season, it could be something really special, like the flower carpets for Corpus Christie or the belènes trail for Christmas. A few months ago Jack and I visited the Iberoamerican Museum for the first time since its refurbishment and we spent a happy hour amidst some fascinating exhibits.

Annual Christmas Day Concert in Santa Cruz

The annual Christmas concert, with music provided by the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra, will take place, as always, on Christmas Day, at 9pm, in Santa Cruz harbour – the Dársena de Los Llanos. Entry is free. This year, the capacity has been increased and some 30,000 are expected. It’s the absolute spirit of Christmas in Tenerife. There are more details of the programme HERE, and for those who cannot attend in person, the concert is always broadcast live on the internet via the Port Authority website HERE.

The Belen, A Christmas Tradition on Tenerife

Seeing a belen unlocks the inner child in me, there’s something magical about these beautiful nativity scenes. They fascinate, especially the most elaborate ones where all village life is depicted. I can stand for ages marvelling at the detail and wit to be found as my eyes wander the little streets, pausing to peek in windows like a giant voyeur.

There is an air about them which stokes nostalgic memories of past times, when Christmas was all about innocent wonderment, about family and compassion rather than frantic consumerism.

Carnival’s eyes on Cultural Heritage

THE annual Santa Cruz Carnival, which attracts hoards of visitors from all over the world, could become a national treasure.

The Culture Ministry has this week initiated proceedings for the spectacular fiesta – second in the world to the Rio festival only – to become part of the nation’s Intangible Cultural Heritage.

And Santa Cruz Council will next year present arguments to incorporate the Carnival on merit, popularity and uniqueness.

Presents From the Other Canary Islands

There’s no need to catch a ferry from Tenerife to one of the other islands to get a taster of what each has to offer, you can do that with a wander around any decent sized supermarket of craft shop. Many stock Canary Islands specialities, some of which are unique to different islands.

Here’s what to look out for if you want to stock up on goodies from the other six islands.

The Problem with Mopping up Sharm el Sheikh Fans

It’s the time of year when we’ve been researching Tenerife hotels in order to pick ones to review for various publications. This research includes checking out reviews on Tripadvisor. During this we’ve noticed a recurring theme running through some recent reviews. Some Tenerife hotels are being marked down by people who had originally planned to visit Sharm el Sheikh but, for reasons we all know, had to have their winter sun break changed to an alternative destination.

Eat Like a Local in Tenerife, Eat Egg and Chips

For foodies, the surprise of what turns up on your plate is part of the fun of trying local dishes when  abroad, even if it turns out to be only a variation of egg and chips. And for anyone who isn’t the most adventurous when it comes to food, ordering huevos al estampido is just one of the many ways there are of eating local dishes which are just a variation of favourites from back home.

Weather Forecast for Tenerife from 14 to 20 December

It’s another good looking forecast with most places experiencing similar weather – mostly sunshine apart from some cloud on Wednesday. It should start hot on most coasts and then level out to being lovely and warm during the second half of the week. There’s a bit of a change on Sunday when the clouds roll in and there’s a good chance of rain everywhere. On the whole, a good week for sunbathing and walking on Tenerife.

Trips and Fishing from South Tenerife Marinas

There are so many ways to experience the sea around Tenerife’s unique coast. The main resort beaches of Playa de Las Americas and Los Cristianos offer numerous whale and dolphin watching trips, and jet ski hire. Marinas tend to offer a wider range and more specialist choices so here are some of the ways you can indulge your interests.

Chill Out Beach Bars in Tenerife

Feeling the warm sun on your face whilst there are cool sounds in the air and an even cooler cocktail in your hands just screams out ‘I’M ON HOLIDAY.’

There have always been plenty of bars backing the beaches on Tenerife, but the last couple of years has seen a rise in beach clubs where you can chill out, eat, drink and be merry in chic surroundings whilst the island’s top DJs treat your ears.

You can find these stylish beach clubs in many of Tenerife’s resorts. These are some of our favourites.

Never Underestimate Walking on Tenerife

At this time of year there are two to three cases every week where people have to be rescued from Tenerife’s great outdoors. Sometimes it’s due to circumstances outside an individual’s control, but too many times it’s as a result of a lack of planning or not understanding how conditions on Tenerife can seriously affect walking and, more importantly, safety.

Five Favourite Tenerife Restaurants and Meals in 2015

However, there are lots of times we’ve enjoyed wonderful meals in restaurants that serve top quality food but which probably aren’t different enough or exceptional enough to make it onto a ‘top 10′ list. For that reason I thought it would be an idea to look back over the Tenerife restaurants we’ve dined in over the last twelve months and choose the five experiences I’ve enjoyed most.

Santa Cruz Is Cruise Ship Crazy

As I looked up from the quayside four cruise ships, AIDAblu, Thomson Dream, Norwegian Epic, and Mein Schiff 4 towered over me, and the Minerva was moored separately on the other side of the port. The combined influx of visitors was 9,900 passengers and 3,580 crew, the shops and bars of Santa Cruz were poised in anticipation for the sweet sound of ringing tills.

Weather Forecast for Tenerife from 7 to 13 December

The forecast is looking pretty good with everywhere experiencing plenty of sunshine although the week may start on the cloudy side, with the south and south west being slightly cloudier than the north and east. There  might be an outside chance of showers over the weekend, but at the moment it looks as though it’s unlikely they would affect the coast. The pattern for expected temperatures continues in much the same way as in recent weeks with a hot start to the week before temperatures drop a bit for the second half of the week. So far that hasn’t really happened and there’s not been much difference throughout the week. There might be some snow on el Teide toward the end of the week but not a lot.

Adeje swings into Christmas

ADEJE has already started its Christmas celebrations with a swing, to open its seasonal programme of peace and unity.

It came in the form of a concert by the Adeje Patron Band last Saturday, with Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga switching on the Christmas lights afterwards.

From now until 5th January, when their majestic Three Kings of the Orient join in the Adeje parade from 7pm, there is a busy programme of events throughout the borough.

Tasty Christmas Traditions on Tenerife

Now that Black Friday has passed and it’s December I feel it’s okay to mention Christmas, not the consumerism frenzy of it all, but some of the tasty little traditions that you’ll encounter if you choose to swap snow for sunshine this festive season.

On the Belen Trail in La Orotava

Colin is a regular visitor to the Ruta de Belénes in Santa Cruz but I prefer the Ruta de Belénes in La Orotava which is now in its eighth year and has 26 belénes within the town limits, far too many to get round in a single visit. Luckily, six of the best are located close to each other within the old quarter and you can easily add them into a town tour. They’re all free to visit.

South Tenerife is Still Battling an Image Problem

We know and work with quite a few people involved with the travel writing business. For years we’ve been fighting outdated perceptions of the island, trying to chip away at the reputation it actually has within the industry. Travel articles shape the views of those who read them and generally speaking Tenerife hasn’t always fared well or, more accurately, parts of it haven’t.

The Best Fiestas and Events on Tenerife in December 2015

With sunbathing temperatures across the island the norm for December  it can sometimes difficult to remember it is actually the festive season on Tenerife. In resort areas hotels do their best to inject a Christmassy atmosphere with some wonderful decorations whilst bars and restaurants have special Christmas and New Year menus and programmes. In traditional towns there’s no mistaking what month it is as there can be a full-on Xmas atmosphere with lots of festive events and streets lit up by beautiful Christmas lights.
