Police intervene in the auction for carnival kiosks in Santa Cruz

Temporary food stall selling street food at carnival in Puerto de la Cruz

Local police in Santa Cruz de Tenerife had to intervene in the auction for carnival kiosk pitches that took place yesterday, due to tension and clashes between some of the businessmen.

The fiesta organisers decided to eject and exclude one of them from bidding for altercation, despite them having already won two pitches (one for potatoes and one for turron), because he became aggressive towards one of the other bidders for those same pitches.

It has been years since there has been an auction as tense and competitive as that celebrated yesterday in the Salón de Actos de Cajasiete, where the interests of various businesses in obtaining the most profitable pitches, by their location, was more than demonstrated.

In the end, the fiestas authority managed to auction off 41 of the 62 pitches, raising €161,000, which is an increase of close to €12,700 on last year. Twenty-one pitches did not sell, one less than in 2017.

In total, 64 temporary carnival kiosks, selling various articles, food and drink, will be installed around Santa Cruz; the 41 auctioned yesterday, plus 23 that the fiestas organisation have reserved for commercial agreements with big brands.

In some cases the pitch prices have tripled, as occurred with a mobile hot dog vendor in Calle de La Marina, where the starting price was €729 and €2,479 was paid following bids by several businesses interested in this pitch. The same happened with a potato vendor in the Calle Valentín Sanz, where the starting price was €729 and €2,042 was eventually paid. Also highlighted is the case of a large food stall in the Plaza de la Candelaria where almost €30,000 was paid, while the starting price was €17,584. For some years no interest was shown in these large food stalls, as they are the most expensive. On this occasion, they have auctioned two of them.

The areas of carnival where the most kiosks will be located, that is to say those in which the auction bidders showed most interest, are in the Calle Valentín Sanz, Plaza del Chicharro, Plaza del Príncipe, Villalba Hervás, Plaza de España and Méndez Núñez, where two new spots - food trucks - have been created, for which €4,269 and €5,473 were paid.

The areas that have not attracted bidders are the Calle La Marina and the Avenidas Marítima and Anaga, where this year staging is being erected for the various performances.

This year for the first time, businesses had to register before being able to participate in the auction, which was attended by more than one hundred people. Some left with their hands in their pockets, angry, while others celebrated that they had obtained the pitches they wanted.

The kiosk pitches that were finally auctioned will be open to the public during carnival, from the 9th to 18th February. There will be all manner including; churros, large food stalls, beer stalls, hot dog and hamburger vendors, fancy dress articles and baked potatoes.

First phase of the junior murgas contest in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Whilst I've always said that the murga groups are an acquired taste (and their political satire is perhaps one of the hardest concepts to grasp if Spanish is not your first language), they are a very popular part of carnival in Tenerife, both for participation and to watch.

So popular in fact that the contests, which essentially decide the running order of the various components of the parades, for the murga groups are split into six heats - three junior and three adult - plus the final. This year, the first of those, the 1st phase of the junior murga contests takes place today, Thursday, 18th January 2018. This heat takes place from 7pm at the The Tenerife International Centre for Trade Fairs and Congresses.

Here's a coverage of last year's equivalent event so you can see what it's about.

Inauguration of Carnival 2018 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Saida Prieto in 2013

Friday, 12 January 2018 sees the Inauguration of Carnival in Santa Cruz de Tenerife with a gala that presents all of the candidates for the carnival queens. Last year a total of 47 aspiring carnival royalty registered to take part in the various contests; 16 for the adult carnival queen, 20 for the junior and 11 for the senior - 13 more than the previous year.

As was announced back in November,

"The big news for Carnaval 2018 is that Saida Prieto, the carnival queen candidate horrendously burnt when her fantasia (carnival dress) caught fire back in 2013, will try again to be Carnival Queen. She will be representing the newspaper Diario de Avisos, and says that she hopes to recover her dream as well as she has recovered her health. I imagine that she will carry the goodwill and hopes of the whole of Tenerife with her, and I can’t imagine what it would take for this enormously brave woman now not to be Reina of Carnaval 2018!"

Santa Cruz de Tenerife now has a Carnival Museum

Home of Carnival Museum in Santa Cruz

Opened on 28th June 2017, the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife now has a museum dedicated to its annual carnival. The Casa del Carnaval (Home of the Carnival) can be found at Calle Galcerán, 17, 38003 Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

The museum is located in a 1,100 square meter building with large terraces, located on the right bank of the Barranco de Santos and just below the emblematic Galcerán Bridge. The museum also contains a cafeteria and a document center with digitized files related to the carnival and its history.

The museum has two exhibition areas; one for temporary exhibitions and also used as an assembly hall, and another for permanent exhibitions in which the costumes of the queen of the carnival of each year are on display, the original posters of the carnival, videos of the history of the fiesta, touch screens and virtual reality glasses, etc.

In addition, the museum also has a workshop for costumes, makeup, masks and wigs. The Casa del Carnaval organizes guided tours and next to the enclosure there is a stop for the tourist bus of Santa Cruz. It also has a gift and merchandising store with souvenirs inspired by the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

The Casa del Carnaval is open every day, except public holidays, from 9am to 7pm. Entrance is €1.50 for residents and €6.00 for tourists.

Radio and Televisión Española Agreement for Carnival 2018

Once more, public television channel, RTVE is to transmit the Gala Election of the Carnival Queen of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (on Wednesday, 7th February), nationally throughout Spain, 50 years since it's first transmission of the event. In 2018, the Rhythym and Harmony Contest will also reach every home in the country. This special coverage comes together with the transmission of other events such as the carnival main parade at a national level.

The Canarian public television stations signed a collaboration agreement for the promotion of the carnival both within and beyond new frontiers. To the almost 20 million people who at some time view these fiestas at a national level, the director of RTVE in the Canaries, Domingo Álvarez, explained “that you have to add the internet audience and viewers of the international channel, with a potential audience of 470 million".

If that's not enough, in 2018, it will also be the first time in history that the Santa Cruz carnival will be able to be viewed in high definition.

Arrival of the Three Kings in Garachico

One of the year's most eagerly awaited events takes place every year on the night of 5th January - the arrival of the three kings - and, in my opinion, nowhere does it better than Garachico. Get there early if you want to park anywhere near the town.

Children - of all ages - will be eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Magi tonight, and you can really see why with this television coverage from last year's cavalcade in Santa Cruz, which is as big an event as carnival itself in the island's capital.

You will note that the main day of carnival, we know it as Shrove Tuesday, this year falls on the 13th of the month. Whether this is going to be auspicious or inauspicious, I cannot say, but in hispanic and Greek culture, instead of Friday, Tuesday the 13th (martes trece) is considered a day of bad luck. We'll cross our fingers that this time it isn't!

Tenerife Fiestas in January 2018

Romería de San Antonio in Tigaiga, Los Realejos

January begins with two public holidays; on 1 January for New Year's Day, of course, and 6 January for Epiphany after the annual arrival of Los Reyes (The Three Kings) the night before. The following two municipal holidays take place this January:

18 Jan Festival of Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza La Guancha
22 Jan Festival of San Vicente Los Realejos

The main celebrations taking place during the month, apart from the parades of the Three Kings in almost every town of any size on the island on the night of 5 January, are the fiestas of San Antonio Abad in La Matanza, Los Silos and Buenavista del Norte on the 3rd or 4th Sundays in January, with the first romería of the year - the Romería de San Antonio in Tigaiga, Los Realejos - taking place on the Sunday nearest to 17 January.

There are also the Fiestas Patronales and the Romería de San Antonio Abad at around the same time in Arona. Whilst in La Caleta in Adeje, there is the Festival of San Sebastián on 19 and 20 January, more photos and information about which can be found at the following reports: Fiesta San Sebastián na Teneryfie and Festival of San Sebastian.
