Rondallas Contest in Santa Cruz 2017

Another species of carnival group in Santa Cruz de Tenerife are the rondallas. A rondalla is an ensemble of stringed instruments played with the plectrum or pick and generally known as plectrum instruments. It originated in Medieval Spain, especially in Catalonia, Aragon, Murcia, and Valencia. The tradition was later taken to Spanish America and elsewhere. The word rondalla is from the Spanish ronda, meaning "serenade."

Here is coverage of the Rondallas Contest this year in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Santa Cruz Comparsas Contest 2017

A comparsa is a group of singers, musicians and dancers that take part in carnivals and other festivities in Spain and Latin America. Its precise meaning depends on the specific regional celebration. In the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, comparsas are similar to Brazilian carnival blocks. As well as the queens, these are what most of us picture when we think of carnival in Tenerife. Here's coverage from this year's Comparsas Contest.

Final of the Murga Contests Santa Cruz 2017

By the end of this week the contests will be over and Santa Cruz carnival will take to the streets. Meanwhile there have been a huge number of contests to choose, basically, the running order of the various groups in the carnival processions. The murga groups are a bit of an acquired taste, I feel and one I never managed to acquire in 16 years on the island. However, I appreciate that they are probably more popular and venerated than religion. Maybe even as important as football. So, here for your veiwing pleasure is the recording of the final of the murga contest 2017. All five and three quarter hours of it. If you manage to watch it right through, you probably qualify as an honorary canarian!

Puerto de la Cruz' Summer Carnival 2016

Mascarita Ponte Tacón (Men's High Heels Marathon)

With Carnaval 2017 now only around a week away, you may enjoy some images and video from the parades and the Mascarita Ponte Tacón (Men's High Heels Marathon) of the Summer Carnival in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife in September 2016.

The aim of the event was to provide a taster to tourists and other visitors of what they will see more of if they come to the carnival proper this February. In that, even the weather obliged as it was dull and cloudy throughout much of the three days!

One thing that was very un-typical of carnival in Tenerife was that none of the visitors seemed to have got the memo about dressing up. We did, because I'm used to Carnival proper, where you would definately feel really awkwardly out of place if you did NOT dress up ... only to be virtually the only two spectators (certainly tourists) in costume!

Tenerife Fiestas in February 2017

Virgen de la Candelaria

February 2nd is an island-wide public holiday in honour of the spiritual patron of the Canary Islands: the Virgen de la Candelaria. The Fiesta de La Candelaria is held every February 2nd, coinciding with the celebration of Candlemass - the Presentation of the Lord and the ritual purification of the Virgin Mary. In the town of Candelaria, where the figure of the Virgin resides, there is a program of religious events lasting several days.

Arafo, Arona, Arico, Candelaria, El Rosario, El Sauzal, Fasnia, Granadilla, Icod de los Vinos, La Matanza de Acentejo, La Laguna, San Miguel, Santa Cruz, Santa Ursula and Tacoronte will all be taking Carnival Tuesday (February 28th this year) off as a municipal public holiday. Yes, the main parts of Carnival are starting this month.
