Following the Extraordinary Assembly of the Federación Interinsular de Automovilismo de Santa Cruz de Tenerife (FIASCT) on Saturday, January 21st, the Motor Sports Calendar for the 2017 Season has been published.

Here are the predicted dates of the main events of carnivals in Tenerife in 2017.

  • Wednesday, February 22nd, 2017 - Election of the Carnaval Queen
  • Friday, February 24th, 2017 - Carnaval Opening Parade
  • Tuesday, February 28th, 2017 - Main Parade
  • Wednesday, March 1st, 2017 - Burial of the Sardine
  • Saturday, March 4th, 2017 - Daytime Carnaval

Puerto de la Cruz

Los Gigantes

We calculate that the 4 main days of the Los Gigantes Carnaval 2017 should run from Friday, 10th March 2017 to Monday, 13th March 2017, thus: 
  • Friday, March 10th, 2017: Election of the Queen, Infant and/or Adult. 
  • Saturday, March 11th, 2017: Kid’s activities
  • Sunday, March 12th, 2017: Main parade from 5pm.
  • Monday, March 13th, 2017: Burial of the Sardine from 9pm.
Dates of Los Gigantes Carnival 2017 are as follows (info from Tourist Office) (Via). This year it will be held over 2 weekends

1st weekend
  • Fri March 10th - Election of the Queen
  • Sat March 11th - Childrens events
  • Sunday March 12th - Grand Parade
2nd weekend
  • Fri March 17th - Sardine parade/Fireworks
  • Sat March 18th - Family events
(The Burial of the Sardine transferring from the Monday night to the Friday, which makes a lot of sense, with some more family events thrown in.)

International Carnival of Los Cristianos 2017 (Arona)


Probably THE most awaited information of the entire year, Arona town hall's Department of Fiestas and the Tourist Board have provided us with a program for Los Cristianos Carnival in advance. This doesn't often happen! They do add the note that this programming may be subject to change. Los Cristianos Carnaval takes place from 17th to the 27th March 2017 and this year's theme is Las Vegas.

The main events are as follows:
  • Friday, 17th March 2017 - 9pm - Presentation of the candidates for infant and adult carnival queens in the Carnival Enclosure in front of the Valdés Center in Los Cristianos.
  • Saturday, 18th March 2017 - 12 midday - Exhibition of photos of Arona Carnival in the Los Cristianos Cultural Center. 4pm - Wig Party, Fiesta del Pelucón 2017 at the Carnival Enclosure in front of the Valdés Center in Los Cristianos. 7pm - Carnival Opening Parade in Los Cristianos
  • Sunday, 19th March 2017 - 12 midday - Carnival Concert by the Arona Town Band in the Plaza de la Pescadera, Los Cristianos. 5pm - Pasacalles de Carnaval 2017 - Street Parade in Los Cristianos. 6pm - Meeting of the Murga groups at the Carnival Enclosure in front of the Valdés Center in Los Cristianos.
  • Monday, 20th March 2017 - 7pm - Festival of the coreographed dance troups at the Carnival Enclosure in front of the Valdés Center in Los Cristianos.
  • Tuesday, 21st March 2017 - 6pm - Carnaval Dance for the senior citizens in the central patio of Los Cristianos Cultural Center. 8pm - Gala for the senior citizens in the Carnival Enclosure in front of the Valdés Center in Los Cristianos.
  • Wednesday, 22nd March 2017 - 8pm - Gala Election of the Infant Carnaval Queen in the Carnival Enclosure in front of the Valdés Center in Los Cristianos.
  • Thursday, 23rd March 2017 - 9pm - Gala for the Election of the Carnaval Queen in the Carnival Enclosure in front of the Valdés Center in Los Cristianos.
  • Friday, 24th March 2017 - 9pm - Drag Queen Gala in the Carnival Enclosure in front of the Valdés Center in Los Cristianos.
  • Saturday, 25th March 2017 - From 11am - Carnaval de Día 2017 - Daytime carnival musical events in the streets and plazas of Los Cristianos. 5pm - Costume contest in the Plaza de la Pescadora, Los Cristianos
  • Sunday, 26th March 2017 - 11am - Exhibition of Classic and Vintage Cars in the Carnival Enclosure in front of the Valdés Center and around Los Cristianos. 12 midday - Pets Costume Contest in the Carnival Enclosure in front of the Valdés Center in Los Cristianos. 4pm - Gran Coso Apoteósico - Carnaval Main Parade in Los Cristianos (if this follows the usual route, starts along by the Arona Gran Hotel.)
  • Monday, 27th March 2017 9pm - Burial of the Sardine. Just says in Los Cristianos. Follow the crowds.

The Canarian Government have agreed the calendar for 2017:
  • 6 January (Epifanía del Señor/Epihany)
  • 2 February (Tenerife’s “island day” for Virgen de la Candelaria)
  • 13 April (Jueves Santo/Easter Thursday)
  • 14 April (Viernes Santo/Easter Friday)
  • 1 May (Fiesta del Trabajo/Workers’ Day)
  • 30 May (Día de Canarias/Canaries Day)
  • 15 August (Asunción de la Virgen/Assumption)
  • 12 October (Fiesta Nacional de España/Spain Day)
  • 1 November (Todos los Santos/All Saints Day)
  • 6 December (Día de la Constitución Española/Constitution Day)
  • 8 December (Inmaculada Concepción/Immaculate Conception)
  • 25 December (Natividad del Señor/Christmas Day)
Nine are "fixed" National Fiestas, two are for the whole of the Canary Islands, then each island also has an additional day of it’s own, which in Tenerife’s case is 2 February (Candlemass – the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple) for the Virgen de la Candelaria. In addition to this, each municipality has a further 2 local days (to be advised), bringing the total up to 14 days.

The month begins with the much awaited annual visit of of Los Reyes (The Three Kings) on night of January 5th and January 6th is a public holiday everywhere in Spain and the Canary Islands as Epiphany is the biggest day of the holidays.

As well as national, regional and island-specific public holidays, each municipality in Tenerife also has its own local public holidays, when town halls and businesses will be closed. Those falling in January 2017 are as follows:
The following fiestas will be taking place on the island this month:
  • 17th January - Fiestas of San Antonio Abad in Arona, Buenavista del Norte, Güímar, La Florida (La Orotava) and Los Silos. [1]
  • 21st January - Fiestas of San Sebastián in Adeje
  • 22nd January - Fiestas of San Antonio Abad in Icod de Los Vinos
  • 22nd January - Fiestas of San Sebastián in Los Realejos
[1] Although the saint's day is January 17th, the main events of the fiesta, the livestock fair and processions, are most likely to take place over the weekend of 14th / 15th January 2017. We'll add more specific details if we hear of them.
