Carnival Queens in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 2014, 2019 and 2008 |
In 1987 the Carnival in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, for the first time, had a theme and listed here are all of the themes and carnival queens since then. Names link to videos of their coronations and, where possible, images. It is interesting to see how they have developed from what was once a dress, into the super-sized confections of today.
- 1987 Rome. Carnival Queen was Mónica Raquel Estévez Martín in a costume entitled, 'Tajaraste', designed by Leo Martínez and inspired by the typical costume of Tenerife, representing Almacenes El Kilo.
- 1988 Wild World. Carnival Queen was Laura Alberto Barroso in a costume entitled, 'Cleopatra Reina del Nilo' (Cleopatra Queen of the Nile) designed by Leo Martínez and representing Galerias Preciados.
- 1989 Millennial Egypt. Carnival Queen was María Remedios Ramos Díaz in a costume entitled, 'Chicharro Carnavalero' designed by José Julio Rodríguez y Juan Fajardo and representing Centro Comercial Maya.
- 1990 Story World. Carnival Queen was Carmen Gloria Trujillo García in a costume entitled, "La Fenicce" (The Phoenix) designed by Justo Gutiérrez and representing Almacenes El Kilo.
- 1991 Space. Carnival Queen was Isabel Luis Hernández in a costume entitled, "Al ritmo de la noche" (The Rhythm of the Night) designed by Leo Martínez and representing J&B Whisky.
- 1992 Cinema. Carnival Queen was Patricia Rodríguez Pérez in a costume entitled, "Catira" (A person who has blonde hair) designed by José Julio Rodríguez y Juan Fajardo and representing Centro Comercial Maya.
- 1993 Circus. Carnival Queen was Carlota Bibiana Sosa Borges in a costume entitled, "Pim, pam, pum... fuego" (Pim, pam, pum ... fire) designed by Marcos Marrero y María Díaz and representing Casinos de Juego de Tenerife.
- 1994 Atlantis. Carnival Queen was Maria Candelaria Rodriguez, with a costume entitled "Diva", by Marcos Marrero, representing Casinos de Tenerife.
- 1995 Thousand and One Nights. Carnival Queen was María Elena Luis Luis in a costume entitled, "Palabras Mágicas" (Magic Words), designed by Marcos Marrero y María Díaz and representing Páginas Amarillas (Yellow Pages).
- 1996 Mexico. Carnival Queen was Nayra Plasencia Jorge in a costume entitled, "Ra" designed by Justo Gutiérrez and representing Almacenes El Kilo.
- 1997 Prehistory. Carnival Queen was Soledad León Rancel in a costume entitled, "Mamut" (Mamoth) designed by Leo Martínez and representing Almacenes El Kilo.
- 1998 The Middle Ages. Carnival Queen was Natalia Castilla Bermúdez in a costume entitled, 'Miss Shaigón' (Miss Saigon) designed by Leo Martínez and representing Almacenes El Kilo.
- 1999 Comic World. Carnival Queen was Laura Pérez Castro in a costume entitled, "A los pies de Yalpur" (At the foot of Jaipur) designed by Vicente Vargas and representing Azul Televisión.
- 2000 Pirates. Carnival Queen was Shaila Martín Ramos (who died in 2003 at the age of 19) in a costume entitled, 'Manila Yerichana' (as seen in National Geographic) designed by Juan Carlos Armas Febles and representing Ron Santa Teresa.
- 2001 Space Odyssey. Carnival Queen was Silvia González Rodríguez in a costume entitled, "Talismán" (Talisman) designed by Juan Pedro Quintero and representing Almacenes El Kilo.
- 2002 The Roaring 20s. Carnival Queen, chosen unanimously, was Lorena Díaz García in a costume entitled, "Alta Temperatura" (High Temperature) designed by Miguel Ángel Castilla and representing Centro Comercial del Mueble.
- 2003 The Far East (China). Carnival Queen was Natalia Díaz Mesa, with a costume entitled "Láquesis" (Lachesis), which was designed by Santi Castro and represented Centro Comercial Carrefour.
- 2004 Celia Cruz. Carnival Queen was Natalia Acosta Jorge in a costume entitled "Miércoles de luna llena" (Full Moon Wednesday), designed by Juan Carlos Armas and representing Bingo Colombófilo.
- 2005 Hollywood Musicals. Carnival Queen was Ana María Pérez Meneses in a costume entitled "Rozando la piel del cielo" (Touching the skin of the sky), designed by Juan Carlos Armas and representing Centro Comercial Alcampo.
- 2006 Tribes. Carnival Queen was Neólida Hernández Martín in a costume entitled El Carro de la Gloria (The Chariot of Glory), designed by Juan Carlos Armas and representing Grupo AC Bingo Colombófilo.
- 2007 Fashion. Carnival Queen was Elizabet García, in a costume entitled, "Miss Dior", designed by Leo Martínez and representing newspaper El Día.
- 2008 Magic. Carnival Queen was Nauzet Celeste Cruz Melo in a costume entitled, "La Edad de Oro" (The Golden Age), designed by Santi Castro and representing Santa Cruz-Carrefour Shopping Center.
- 2009 Horror Films. Carnival Queen was Ana María Tavárez Mata, with a costume entitled Embrujada (Bewitched) designed by Leo Martínez and representing newspaper El Día.
- 2010 Carnival History. Carnival Queen was Alicia San Juan McNulty, in a costume entitled, "En el País de las Maravillas" (In Wonderland) - her name is Alicia (Alice), after all - designed by Leo Martínez and representing El Día.
- 2011 Enrique González and Canarian murgas. Carnival Queen was Naomi Cabrera Pulido, with a costume entitled, "Cien años de historia" (One Hundred Years of History), designed by Leo Martínez and representing El Día.
- 2012 Flower Power. Carnival Queen was Carmen Gil González, with a costume entitled, 'Imperio' (Empire), designed by Santi Castro and representing Zona Comercial Tranvía.
- 2013 Bollywood: India. Carnival Queen was Soraya Rodríguez Castro in a costume entitled, "Volare" (Fly), designed by Saliarca Creativos and representing Centro Comercial Carrefour – Meridiano.
- 2014 Cartoons. Carnival Queen was Amanda Perdomo San Juan in a costume entitled “Poderosa Amazona” (Powerful Amazon), designed by Daniel Pages and representing McDonald´s & La Opinión de Tenerife.
- 2015 The Future. Carnival Queen was Adtemexi Cruz Hernández with a costume entitled 'Áurea' (Golden), designed by Jorge González Santana and representing Fuente Alta and the association 'Tu Santa Cruz'.
- 2016 The 80s. Cecilia Navarro Arteaga was Carnival Queen in a costume entitled, "Arena blanca del desierto" (White Desert Sand) was designed by Daniel Pages and represented McDonald´s & La Opinión de Tenerife.
- 2017 Caribbean. Carnival Queen was Judit López García in a costume entitled, 'Madame Soleil' (Madam Sun), was designed by Jorge González Santana and in representation of the bottled water company, Fuentealta.
- 2018 Fantasy. Carnival Queen Carmen Laura Lourido Pérez, with a costume entitled 'Renacida' (Reborn), designed by Jorge González and representing FuenteAlta (bottled water).
- 2019 The Deep Sea. Carnival Queen was Priscila Medina Quintero, with a costume entitled “La Nuit” (The Night) designed by Sedomir Rodríguez de la Sierra and representing Autoinsular Citroën.
- 2020 The Flirty Fifties. Carnival Queen was Sara Cruz Teja in a costume entitled Sentir (Feel), designed by Sedomir Rodríguez de la Sierra and sponsored by hypermarket Centro Comercial Alcampo La Laguna.
- 2021 Carnivals of the World. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, there was no carnival in the streets in 2021 and merely some virtual and televised events. There were also no new carnival queens elected in 2021, just Guardians of the Sceptre chosen until carnival is able to be celebrated again.
