Children's Carnival Parade in Santa Cruz 2023

Coso Infantil 2023

The celebration of the Piñata de Carnaval weekend started yesterday (24 Feb) with the Children's Carnival Parade, one of the most endearing events of the carnival program, which, starting at 6:00 p.m., toured the centre of the capital from the Numancia and Méndez Núñez streets, running to Villalba Hervás street.

A parade in which, as is tradition, hundreds of boys and girls from all the children's carnival groups participated, as well as the award-winning costumes, children's centres and the batucadas from the Virgen del Mar and Bethencourt y Molina schools, and all the little carnival-goers dressed in their best costumes who wanted to join in saying goodbye, in style, to carnival for another year.

The public gathered along the pavements enjoyed seeing Ione Díaz Serna, Children's Queen of Carnival, who paraded with her court of honour, made up Paola Bello Navarro, Nayara Plasencia Mesa, Carla López Alonso and Iraya Hernandez Perez. They were accompanied by the murguitas and other children's groups.

Carnival Main Parade in Santa Cruz 2023

Comparsa Los Rumberos with the Santi Castro designed costume, "Britania".

Yesterday afternoon's (Shrove Tuesday, 21 Feb) Coso Apotheosis of Carnival (Main Parade) brought together thousands of residents and tourists for the highest point of the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The parade of groups, characters, queens and ladies passed brilliantly through the avenues of Anaga and Marítima, packed with the public. Nearly 10,000 people participated in the grand parade.

After the massive weekend and Carnival Monday, a bit of order and tranquillity arrived with one of the most significant and traditional parades. The hangover, real and emotional, was evident on the faces of the thousands of attendees who came to see the carnival groups and the queens, in what was to be their last official tour of the city in this edition of carnival, which has been dedicated to New York.

With a light breeze and a practically clear sky, the parade began, five minutes late, with the NiFú-NiFá at the head, as is customary. Behind them, some Carnival characters, such as Michael Jackson, accompanied by people in costumes, who escorted Los Rumberos, winners of the first prize for presentation in the comparsas' contest with it's allegory, "Britania", designed by Santa Castro, in homage to the British Royal Guard. Then the Queen of Carnival arrived with Santi Castro, and her entire team flanking the fantasy "Lisboa" (Lisbon), then followed Los Joroperos, the first prize winners for interpretation in comparsas, who are also celebrating their 50th Anniversary, then Mamelucos, winners of Presentation in murgas.

Throughout the next three and a half hours, over 9,000 people paraded along the Avenida Marítima, with the floats of the maids of honour, junior and senior carnival queens and all of the non-winning carnival queen candidates, interspersed with the various carnival groups. Some 270 buses had transported visitors from both the north and the south of the island, to occupy the stands set up exclusively for them, thanks to agreements with tour operators. After the parade, which ended with the floats after 7:30 p.m., night had already fallen and the fair was packed with people who wanted to eat or enjoy the attractions as a family.

Los Joroperos win Rhythm and Harmony 2023

Los Joroperos at Rhythm and Harmony 2023 RITMO Y ARMONÍA by iLoveTheworld

The comparsa, Los Joroperos, won first prize this Saturday in the Rhythm and Harmony contest, held on Francisco La Roche and Marítima avenues, with the participation of nine formations. The second prize went to Bahía Bahitiare and the third went to Tropicana, while Cariocas achieved 4th or highly commended.

Thousands of people followed in the parade along the entire route, as well as in the stands installed in the vicinity of the Plaza de España. In addition to the comparsas, the 2023 Carnival Queen, her court of honour and six of the other candidates in the great pageant of the Santa Cruz festivities, also participated in the parade.

Santa Cruz estimates 350,000 attendees to the first carnival weekend

Mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, underlines "the enormous desire that people had to meet again on the street" and points out that "the data from the few incidents confirm our Carnival as the safest in the world" [while this could be a political platitude, my personal experience of the carnival is that this is true].

Throughout the weekend, the stages located in the Plaza del Príncipe and La Candelaria, as well as the one on Avenida Francisco La Roche, hosted a multitude of concerts in which, mainly, Canarian artists and orchestras performed, which enlivened the dances on Friday and Saturday night.

Carnival Opening Parade in Santa Cruz 2023

CABALGATA ANUNCIADORA by Ilovetheworld

A dizzying parade with 9,000 participants opens the days of street parties that, until Piñata Sunday, 26 February, make Santa Cruz "the city that never sleeps".

With the Carnival parade last night, New York arrived in the streets of Santa Cruz, with its lights and shadows. Not even the yellow taxis of the Big Apple, accustomed to traffic jams, would have dared yesterday to approach the traffic jam that was experienced at the beginning of the parade, located on Avenida de Belgica.

There, the carnival groups waited impatiently to begin the parade that last night welcomed to the streets the party that the city has been waiting so long to host. The rain surrendered to the street carnival, after threatening all morning to suspend it, something that was finally not necessary. Only at the beginning of the parade, and also at the end, could the umbrellas be seen, which were soon put away to enjoy the groups, floats and queens, who waited for the start of the parade.

This year, the route had novelties, in that, while the queens, their court of honour and the groups left from the usual location, the decorated cars and floats did so - without the delay caused by the rest of the parade - from the Galcerán bridge.

Then the drums of the NiFú-Nifá began to sound and the magic of the most important party in the Canary Islands flooded the streets of the Tenerife capital. With the pioneering murga at the head, the procession began to walk the streets under the watchful eye of thousands of people, who not even the rain demobilized.

Carnival Queen, Adriana Peña Fumero, at the Carnival Opening Parade 2023

Escorted by the Fufa and some energetic Joroperos, winners of the first prize in the comparsas, who were accompanied by the star Marlene Mourreau, the brand new Queen of Carnival arrived, Adriana Peña, who was applauded for her sympathy and for the colossal design by Santi Castro entitled Lisbon.

Behind her were Los Cariocas, second in Comparsas Interpretation; the winners of the costume contest; Trapaseros, winners of the first prize for Interpretation of murgas; the winning musical group, Caña Dulce, followed by the rest of the winning groups, who took turns with the Queen's court of honour.

Pirates, sailors, clowns, tribes, carnival characters and even soldiers were mixed in a unique parade, which the public received with applause and cheers, honouring the work that carnival groups and designers have prepared. The applause was only overshadowed by the batucadas, who recalled that this party will be even bigger in this edition due to the immense desire to enjoy normality.

It was 9:00 p.m. and the award-winning groups had not finished leaving Avenida de Bélgica when Burlonas arrived, one of the few female murgas who have won an Interpretation award, an achievement that the public recognized with applause.

The more than 9,000 people who participated in this massive procession showed that carnival is more alive than ever and that Santa Cruz, once again, robbed New York of the title of being the city that never sleeps, for a week.

Tenerife in February 2023

Bronze sculpture outside the Theatre Guimera by Polish sculptor Igor Mitoraj

Thursday, 2nd February 2023 is a Public Holiday in Tenerife, for the Feast of the Purification of the Virgin or Presentation of Jesus, or Candlemas. This is the only public holiday this month and is specific to the island (the other Canary Islands have their own days at various times). The Patron of the Canary Islands, the Virgen de Candelaria or Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria (Virgin of Candelaria), is housed in the Basilica of Candelaria in the town of Candelaria. And Candelaria translates to Candlemas, which 40 days after Christmas, also marks the end of the of the Christmas Period and the Eve of Candlemas (1st February) is when Christmas decorations and greenery should be removed from homes and churches.

The night of the 1st to the 2nd February is celebrated with the "Procession of the Candles" in Candelaria, during which the lights are extinguished in the town. The faithful pray the Rosary carrying lighted candles, which symbolize Jesus as the light of all people. Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria is also celebrated on 2 February in Alcalá, Guía de Isora in La Vera, San Juan de la Rambla and in Puerto de la Cruz.

Candelaria also celebrates San Blas on 3 February.

San Valentín: February country fiestas in Fuente Nueva La Zarza, Fasnia.

Carnival 2023 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, inaugurated on 20 January, is the biggest event taking place on the island this month and the contests leading up to it continue, culminating with the Election of the Carnival Queen on Wednesday 15 February 2023. Carnival in the street then begins with the Opening Parade on Friday 17 February 2023 and comes to an end on Sunday 26 February 2023.

Wednesday, 15 February is also the annual appointment when the Santa Catalina convent in La Laguna will be opened to view the incorrupt body of Sor María de Jesús (Sister Mary of Jesus de León y Delgado) (1643 – 1731). This year, the traditional visit to 'la Siervita' recovers complete normality. The day will start with the traditional mass, at 07:00, in the sanctuary of the convent, after which the doors will be opened for visits, as confirmed by the Bishopric.

The Rutas de Almenros en Flor (Almond Blossom Routes) continue. On Saturday 4 Feb there is a Ruta sin barreras (Disabled); on Saturday 11 Feb, a Route for Lovers and on Saturday 18 Feb a Route for Families. These are part of the Cultural Program of Santiago del Teide Town Hall, but booking is essential and must be made via El Cardón NaturExperience HERE. The walks cost a nominal €5. The routes are all in Spanish, but the staff at El Cardón, in my experience, are likely to speak English for bookings and queries. Even if you don't wish to join a guided route, this is the season to go up to the area to see the blossom.

Martes de Carnaval, Shrove Tuesday, February 21st 2023 will be a municipal holiday on much of the island; in Arafo, Arico, Arona, Candelaria, El Rosario, El Sauzal, Fasnia, Granadilla de Abona, Icod de los Vinos, La Matanza de Acentejo, La Orotava, La Victoria de Acentejo, Los Silos, San Cristóbal de La Laguna, San Miguel de Abona, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Santa Úrsula and Tacoronte. In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, this is the day of the Coso Apotheosis (Carnival Main Parade) which begins at around 4 pm, processing along the road in front of the city's port.
