Tenerife Carnival Dates for 2023

The poster for Santa Cruz de Carnival 2023, entitled “Carnaval, la ciudad que nunca duerme" (Carnival, the city that never sleeps), by Nareme Melián Mahugo.

Santa Cruz Carnival in 2019 was the last that was celebrated with complete normality; Carnival in 2020, if it narrowly missed being curtailed by the start of the pandemic, was disrupted by calima and high winds; Santa Cruz Carnival in 2021 was virtual only and Santa Cruz Carnival 2022 was held, unusually, in June

The events in the run up to Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival 2023 will start on Friday, January 20 and will conclude on February 26 with Piñata Sunday. In between, will be more than five weeks of parties between contests and carnival in the street in what will be the definitive return of carnivals after the pandemic.

The dates for Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife 2023 are now confirmed. Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival 2023 takes to the streets between Friday, 17 February 2023 and Sunday, 26 February 2023. The calendar for Carnival 2023 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife at the official carnival website agrees with our timetable below.

New York, the city that never sleeps

Nueva York, la ciudad que nunca duerme’ (New York, the city that never sleeps), was chosen from among the three options to be the theme of the 2023 Carnival of Santa Cruz of Tenerife. The result of the online voting was that the winner received a total of 1730 votes, 44.6%. ‘La Televisión’ (Television) obtained 1557 votes and ‘Un mundo sostenible’ (A Sustainable World) received 593 votes.

Inauguration and Carnival Contests:
Carnival in the Street:

It has been said that Carnival 2023 would be "one of the earliest celebrated in history", but actually carnival in 2024 will be over a week earlier with Shrove Tuesday falling on 13 February; even earlier in 2027, on 9 Feb. The earliest that carnival has taken place was in 2008, when Shrove Tuesday fell on 5 Feb.

Puerto de la Cruz Carnival

Puerto de la Cruz Carnival 2023 is confirmed to be taking place between 9 and 26 February 2023, with more details from the Carnaval Internacional de Puerto de la Cruz, these are the dates of some of the main events:

Los Gigantes Carnival

Los Gigantes Carnival usually begins on the Friday ten days after Shrove Tuesday, meaning that their carnival should start on Friday 3 March 2023 and their Main Parade is usually on the Sunday afternoon, that would be Sunday 5 March 2023, at around 5pm. There is information that Carnaval Los Gigantes, is to run from March 2nd - 12th 2023. This does not list what events will take place on which days.

Los Cristianos Carnival

CONFIRMED: After talking directly with Arona Council (long story), I can now list the confirmed dates of Los Cristianos Carnival 2023, which are between 9 and 20 March 2023, with their Coso Apoteosis (Carnival Main Parade) taking place on Sunday, 19 March 2023.

UPDATE: Double-checking again today (15 Feb), as I do periodically, I've found that Arona Town Hall has changed the published dates of the Carnival in Los Cristianos 2023 to between 17 and 27 March 2023 (Sunday, 26th March 2023 is the Coso Apoteosis - Main Parade), see Calendario de las Fiestas del Municipio de Arona 2023La Agenda also have these same dates for Carnaval de Los Cristianos, but there's no further information available on the program.

EDIT 28 FEB 2023: Program for International Carnival in Los Cristianos 2023

The International Carnival of Los Cristianos returns to the streets after three years with Japan as the theme. Arona recycles the poster, designed by illustrator and graphic designer Nareme Melián for the 2020 edition, which had to be suspended due to the pandemic.

The festivities will begin on Friday, March 17; the Announcing Parade along the Golden Mile of Playa de las Américas is on Saturday, March 18; continue with a Carnival Parade on Sunday, March 19 and the Main Parade on Sunday, March 26. Other shows will be the Drag Night, Daytime Carnival, Beach Route and various activities, culminating with the Burial of the Sardine on Monday, March 27

Among the events planned for this edition is the Announcing Parade, which will be held on Saturday, March 18 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., from the Gala Shopping Centre, on Avenida Rafael Puig Lluvina, to the Oasis Shopping Centre. At 6:30 p.m., at the Carnival site (in front of the Valdés Centre building), there will be the Meeting of the Murga groups.

On Tuesday, March 21, there's the Carnival troupe exhibition-contest, while on Wednesday, March 22 the Festival of Choreographic Groups and on Thursday, March 23 the Dance for the Elderly is in the central patio of the Los Cristianos Cultural Centre and the Great Carnival Show, in front of the Valdés Centre.

The Daytime Carnival will take place on Saturday March 25 with two stages: one for the family in the Plaza de la Pescadora, with performances, a costume contest, workshops or parades, and another with national and international artists in the central area. That same day will be the VII Beach Route, from the Plaza de la Pescadora, and two different areas. The latter will be located in the Plaza del Pescador, on the esplanade outside the Los Cristianos Cultural Centre.

On Sunday March 26, the Gran Coso Apotheosis of the Carnival (Main Parade) will take place from the Paloma Beach Apartments to the Los Cristianos Cultural Centre, while on Monday March 27, the Burial of the Sardine (Plaza del Pescador) and the DJ area will end the Carnival Los Cristianos International 2023.

Raquel García: "A joy for Los Cristianos after three years". Councillor for Fiestas, Raquel García, has underlined the importance of this “traditional celebration for all the people of Arona, but in a very special way for beachgoers. It will be - she added - a great joy for Los Cristianos after three years without being held, since it was one of the first events to be suspended in the municipality as a result of the pandemic and the declaration of the state of alarm, so it is great news. On the other hand, we have tried to adapt its organization in such a way that it has the least possible impact from the point of view of inconvenience to the residents”.

On 11 Mar 2020, just one day before it was due to begin, the Carnival in Los Cristianos 2020 had to be suspended because of the pandemic. The theme of that carnival had been Japan and you cannot blame, but can applaud the authorities in Arona for recycling that theme this year, rather than waste all of the material that had undoubtedly already been prepared, but was not, in the end, able to be used.

The beach carnival is the second most important in Tenerife, after that of Santa Cruz, with a total influx of 125,000 people, 20,000 of them to the Daytime Carnival, and an economic return to the business community of the municipality that is estimated at more than six million euros, which accounts for its relevance.

Any change to these dates is entirely beyond our control.

Typical Yellow Spanish Pillar Box in Buenavista del Norte, Tenerife

January 1, being a Sunday and a non-working day already, there is no public holiday for New Year's Day 2023 in Tenerife. Neither is the next day off in lieu as there are still the required number of days in the year's public holiday calendar. The only public holiday, therefore, in January 2023, is on 6 January for Epiphany.

The Feria de Artesanía de Reyes (Three Kings Crafts Fair) takes place in Santa Cruz and La Laguna from 2 to 5 January for those last minute gift purchases.

From January 3 to 5, the “Dreamer Market” will take place in the Plaza de la Iglesia de la Concepción, Santa Cruz, with 49 tents with hours between 11:00 and 21:00.

On the Eve of Epiphany, January 5th, Los Reyes (The Three Kings) arrive from the east (or in helicopters), bringing gifts. Starting at 5:00 pm that evening, the reception of the Three Wise Men will this year return to the Heliodo Rodríguez Stadium, which will give way to the traditional parade that, from 7:00 pm, will follow its usual route through the streets of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. January 6thDía de Reyes (Three Kings' Day) is the biggest day of the Christmas season.

The Fiestas in honour of San Amaro, Santa Lucía y San Sebastián take place annually on the Sunday after 15th January in Machado, El Rosario.

La Guancha celebrates Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza on 18 January.

The Festival of San Sebastián in La Caleta, Adeje is on 20 January. Garachico also celebrates the Fiesta de San Sebastián, as does Icod de los Vinos.

Los Realejos celebrates San Vicente on 22 January.

There are Fiestas of San Antonio Abad in Arona, Buenavista del Norte (4th Sunday), Chio, Gúímar, La Matanza de Acentejo, El Amparo (Icod de los Vinos), Los Silos (3rd Sunday), La Florida (La Orotava) and El Tanque. In La Florida, the celebrations include the Gran Puchero, which literally does feed five-thousand. Many of the San Antonio Abad celebrations are likely to include Romerías and craft fairs.

In Arona, the main celebrations for San Antonio Abad are on Sunday 15 January 2023 with the traditional romería and blessing of the animals following from the mass at 11 am. The day will begin, however, at 10:00 a.m. with the opening of the craft exhibition. As every year, Arona council makes a free transport service available to residents and tourists with two points of departure and arrival located on Avenida Juan Carlos I in Los Cristianos, in front of the Infanta Leonor Auditorium, and in Playa de las Américas on Avenida Noelia Afonso García, in front of the Central Zenter hotel. Departures at 10:00, 11:00 and 12:00, with return at 16:00, 17:00 and 18:00.

The Fiestas of La Milagrosa, are celebrated in El SaltoGranadilla de Abona, at the end of January.

Later in the month or early February, depending on the weather, the annual Ruta de Almendro en Flor (Almond Flower Route) usually takes place.

And this year the biggest event, coming just a couple of weeks after the end of the Christmas celebrations, is the Inauguration of Carnival 2023 on Friday, 20 January, and the start of the carnival contests on Thursday, 26 January.

Twelve secrets to welcome in the New Year

Do you want to know how to receive 2023 in the best way? Do you wish prosperity for the New Year 2023?

We knew about wearing red underwear and eating the twelve Uvas de la Suerte ("lucky" grapes), but this is next level. All superstitious nonsense, of course, but any help is probably welcome ...

1. Lentils

So that you do not lack food and luck. Ten minutes before midnight, take a handful of lentils and put them in your pockets and purse and keep some in your right hand.

2. Underwear

Yellow: If you want to be very lucky during the year.

Red: If you want to find true love and passion in your life.

Green: To give strength to your health.

3. Wristband:

Buy a red ribbon to attract lasting love and passion into your life and tie it around your left wrist into a bracelet. You can also buy a pink one and put it with the red one, this will help you find unconditional and pure love.

4. Suitcase:

If you want to travel during the year, take a big suitcase, you don't need to put clothes in it, just run out at 12:15 and go around the block from your house. The longer the turn, the farther you'll go.

5. Candles:

Gold: To attract money and abundance into your life.

Red: To fan the flame of love.

Pink: To find an ideal love in your life.

Blue: To achieve your professional goals or change jobs.

Green: For health.

Yellow: To attract business.

White: To heal any relationship or simply acquire peace.

Purple: To transmute the negative into positive and remove all the bad energies from your life.

6. Red Apple:

Write around it: "I (your full name) want to find a love that respects me, loves me and makes me happy. Likewise, that I can make that person happy and love and respect him." Pour a little honey around it and finally, a little cinnamon powder, leave it on a plate in your room or wherever you want for seven days.

7. Bath:

With red and pink rose petals and honey, for love.

With sea salt to ward off envy and cleanse you.

With chamomile to heal the soul.

With sugar and eucalyptus to forgive.

8. Silver:

Have in your right pocket, 200 euros or 100. (And if you're poor?)

9. Luck and love:

When you greet the new year, greet someone of the opposite sex first so that you don't lack love. If you can, invite a trusted man who is not from the family, at 12 o'clock to add a touch of luck to everyone's life.

10. The 12 grapes:

When eating the 12 grapes and making your wishes for the New Year, learn to ask from the soul and without demanding, and you will see how the universe fulfils your wishes.

11. A glass of champagne:

Put a gold ring in the glass. Drink the drink (do we need a warning here to take care not to swallow the ring?) and then take the ring out and put it on and don't take it off if possible during the year.

12. For your house:

In the corners of your house put lemons cut into four, which will remove envy and bad energy. Sprinkle a few coins under the beds, buy a beautiful aloe vera and put it at the entrance; those will bring you good luck.

Tenerife Rally Calendar 2023

Tenerife Rally Calendar 2023

The Inter-island Automobile Federation of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has prepared the Tenerife Rally Calendar 2023 (still to be approved in the General Assembly, in addition to adapting some dates to the regional programming).

The asphalt rallies section contemplates the same events as 2022, although with some changes in dates and the inclusion of the Mini-Rally Santiago del Teide-Guía de Isora, on December 9. Once again the season opens on April 14-15, with the Orvecame-Norte Rally; Villa de Granadilla remains in the month of June 16-17 and the date for Villa de Adeje is proposed for June 30-July 1, as a result of its possible inclusion in the CERA (Copa de Spain of Rallies on asphalt). The City of La Laguna Rally is to be held on the last weekend of July 28-29.

The Historic Tenerife Rally, goes from the first week of May last season, to the month of October 27 and 28, two weeks after Isla Tenerife on October 13-14, which means a considerable organizational effort for CD Rallyten Sport.

The Rallyesprint modality maintains the two usual events: Atogo, September 29-30 and La Gomera, November 10-11. Rallyesprint Arico has been added on 9 Sep.

The opening of the hillclimb calendar is El Boquerón, scheduled for March 25. Palo Blanco, goes to the summer month of July 7 and 8 while the rest of the climbs maintain these dates: Guía de Isora, June 2-3; Los Loros, September 22-23; Tamaimo, October 6-7; San Miguel, Oct 21; Icod-La Guancha, November 3-4; and Arona-La Escalona, November 24-25. The non-inclusion of the Güímar Hillclimb, stands out, possibly due to its non-celebration in 2022 due to the illness of Juan Carlos Batista, president of the Valle de Güímar Squad.

Tenerife in December 2022

Christmas Shopping on the Calle del Castillo (Santa Cruz de Tenerife)

There are three national public holidays this month: Tuesday, 6 December for the Día de la Constitución Española (Spanish Constitution); Thursday, 8 December for Inmaculada Concepción (Immaculate Conception) and Monday, 26 December, a day in lieu, as Navidad (Christmas Day) falls on Sunday.

As in previous years, there are no municipal holidays in December.

This year, it's confirmed that "Normal" Christmas returns to Santa Cruz with more events, markets and lights. The Christmas period started on November 23 (one day before the lights switch on); the market returns to the traditional space of the Alameda del Duque Santa Elena; The Gastromercadillo will also display its culinary offer in the Plaza de España, from December 16 to January 8, with a program of its own musical activities to liven up the various days.

December 21, 2022 marks the 40th Anniversary of the Parlamento de Canarias (Parliament of the Canary Islands). On December 21, 1982, the the first plenary session of the Provisional Parliament was held, after a recently released Statute of Autonomy of the Canary Islands. It has been four decades that have transformed the social, political, economic and cultural life of the islands.

The holiday period kicks off proper with the Spanish Christmas Lottery, which is drawn on 22 December. Various streets of the capital will host the Lo Divino Tour, a musical offering by more than 30 folk groups from the municipality, which from 7:00 p.m. on December 23 will perform Christmas carols and melodies.

In the evening of Christmas Day, the annual Christmas Day Concert will be given by the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra in the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

On 28 December, beware of El Día de Los Santos Inocentes (Day of the Innocent Saints), the Spanish equivalent of April Fool's Day.

And that brings us to the end of the year, when, in Santa Cruz, the New Year's Eve party will once more be back in the Plaza de La Candelaria.

Arona Council will celebrate in style the farewell to 2022 and welcome 2023 with the 'Great New Year's Eve Party', which returns after a two-year hiatus and will be held on Saturday 31 Dec in the surroundings of the Cultural Centre in Los Cristianos.

Tenerife in November 2022

Cemetery in Buenavista del Norte, Tenerife

The month of November begins with a national public holiday on the 1st for Todos los Santos (All Saints), which, along with the 2nd (All Souls), are days when, traditionally, people visit cemeteries, clean up the graves and bring new flowers to their departed loved ones, with more flowers sold than on Valentine's Day. As every year, there are reports already bemoaning that the "price and scarcity of flowers mark the All Saints' Day campaign", this year blaming inflation.

This event is not without celebration, see Recipes for All Saints Day.

The Maratón Internacional de Santa Cruz de Tenerife Naviera Armas (Santa Cruz de Tenerife International Marathon), takes place on 13 November.

November 18 is the Anniversary of the Chinyero eruption in Santiago del Teide.

The Christmas period will begin in Santa Cruz de Tenerife on 23 November, and on Thursday, 24 November, at 6:30 p.m., the traditional lighting of the Christmas lights will take place in the Plaza del Príncipe. Investment in Christmas lighting is close to 780,000 euros, but spending will be reduced because they will be turned off at 2:00 in the morning due to energy responsibility.

The only municipal holiday is 25 November for Santa Catalina in Tacoronte.

On 29 November, the Eve of San Andrés (Saint Andrew's Day), in Icod de los Vinos they celebrate their Tablas de San Andrés and in Puerto de la Cruz, the Fiesta del Cacharro y la Castaña (Fiesta of the pots and chestnuts).

This month we reach the final event on the Tenerife Rally 2022 Season Calendar, the 31st Rallye Villa de Adeje (Rally Villa de Adeje), which this year goes from being the event that usually opened the rally championship in the past to the one that will close the season, taking place on 24, 25 and 26 November.
